New executive director of HODAC is
ready for the challenge put before him
By BRIAN HITE
Staff Writer
On September sth, the Houston
Drug Action Council (HODAC)
experienced a new beginning. On
that day the agency began its rela
tionship with a new Executive
Director, Dick Bcxlcn.
Only four days prior to his new
job, Bextcn's retirement from
Robins Air Force Base became ef
fective. So much for vacations.
After two years in the U.S. Army
and twenty-seven years in the Air
Force, Bcxten decided to trade in his
stripes for a pair of wing lips and
enter the civilian world.
"It has been very rewarding so
far," Bcxten said. "The community
has rolled out the welcome mat to
me and my family."
The Bcxten family, Dick, wife
Judy, and daughter Jacqueline, have
lived all over the world during his
tenure with the armed services.
They have decided to settle in
Warner Robins and have some
roots.
In his duly as Staff Judge Advo
cate for the Air Logistics Center on
base, Bexten garnered a lot of
experience in the area he is now
working.
"1 have had to deal with people
from all walks of life," Bcxten said.
"I have served on many substance
abuse councils in the military."
Bcxten is serious about his
commitment and refers to it as just
that, instead of calling it a job.
"I have made a commitment to
the objectives of the agency. 1 be
lieve HODAC has a new future,
one in which we arc making great
strides," Bexten said.
Not only is the new director
maintaining sight of his objectives,
he is setting goals for the agency
that he hopes will be attainable in a
short period of time.
Flu shots are now available at the Perry Health Dept.
By MICHELLE M. BALLARD

The season is just around the
corner and many people in the
United Slates will have fever,
chills, cough and soreness or aching
in their backs, legs and arms caused
by the flu.
Influenza is caused by a virus.
The viruses that cause flu frequently
change, so the vaccine must also
change. Because of this, you must
be vaccinated yearly. The viruses in

The core of the play is Geiger as
Opal, this role requires an actress of
wit, warmth, and wisdom. To be
truly believable these traits have to
shine through the actress saying the
lines. Geiger fairly beams. It is a
beautiful performance full of bril
liant moments. On the night 1 saw
the play, everybody loved Nancy.
Andrews, McArthur and Kitlrcll
play the terrible trio that plot to
cause Opal harm. Andrews is
cherubic charm as "Bozo." Kitlrcll
is caustic sarcasm as "Winter." and
one of my favorite actress,
McArthur, is touching hilarity as

"We want to pul confidence in
the community that HODAC is a
sound organization," he said.
"Once we accomplish that first
goal, all of the others will fall into
place."
According to Bcxten, the com
munity support has been excellent
thus far. He has already been in
volved with other agencies that
work with the same types of people
that HODAC docs.
The drug action council helps
those people, both adolescent and
adult, who have a serious problem
with substance abuse. While many
of the programs deal with individual
counseling, there has been a
movement towards prevention and
education rather than treatment.
The agency is looking into ex
panding with more prevention pro
grams in the near future.
"If we could get to the young
people, we could eliminate the
substance abuse problem," Bcxten
said.
HODAC is a service to the whole
county, not just Warner Robins.
People who feel they have a prob
lem are encouraged to visit the fa
cilities and sec how the agency op
erates.
"It is very challenging, interest
ing, and exciting to be a part of
HODAC," Bcxten said. "We arc
providing a great service to the
community."
While talking about the agency,
Bcxten is quick to give credit to his
staff of counselors and administra
tion. He refers to the operation as
"superior" and it is obvious they
feel the same way.
"There is a sense of relief," said
Renee Penn, an Administrative As
sistant. "Things arc much belter
with someone at the helm."
HODAC operated for quite some

"Everybody Loves Opal" is more
than just a funny story. It is a play
that re-educates us to the power of
positive thinking. Without being

agency needs to help it prosper.
Since the agency is non-profit, the
commitment is much greater since
funds arc not always easy to come
by.
Bcxten appears to be ready for the
