The last thing I wanted to men
tion was, of course, the great game
Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.

Hunter was injured in an earlier
game this year but has returned to
the runningback corp.
"We haven't played well but it's
not the quarterback's fault," Pitts
added. "We arc in a rebuilding year
and just playing week to week."
The Bulldogs are coming off a
14-0 vicotry over Americas Pan
thers one week after being defeated
14-0 by the other Americas school,
Sumter County.
Coach John Stephens of the
Panthers adds that just because his
team is playing on their homcficld,
his team can’t feel comfortable
HOMECOMING, from ib_
"We've just been struggling, but we
don't want to classify this as a re
building year."
The two teams met last year in
the playoffs with FPD taking an 8-
7 overtime victory.
Both coaches feel this will not
have any bearing on the teams
ability to get up for the game.
""We don't have a lot of players

It looked as if the Lady Hornets
would make short work of the Lady
Vikings, and they did in the first
game, but the second game would
not be that easy.
Westfield jumped out to a 3-0
lead in the first inning. April
Horsting reached on an error. San
tiago doubled and Christi Horsting
homered to give Westfield a 3-0
The Hornets added one more in
the third. Laura Langston led off
the third inning with a single. Two
outs later, Christi Horsting singled
to score Langston.
LTD picked up their lone run in
the fourth inning. The Lady
Vikings used four hits to pick up
one run. That made the score West
field 4, FPD 1.
The Lady Hornets added two more
runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Baldwin Braves scalp Perry
B-team in first game of year

Inexperience and a case of
fumblitis was the telling story
when the Perry High School B
team traveled to Baldwin County
High School Saturday afternoon in
their first game of the season.
Perry handed the Braves four first
half fumbles enrout to a lopsided
26-8 defeat.
Perry was playing in their first
game ol the season while the
Braves, from Millcdgcville, were
playing in their fifth game of the
year.
After playing on an even keel
with the much more experienced
Braves in the first period, the
Braves used 18 second period points
to their advantage and never looked
hack.
Baldwin used one tumble to score
early in the period and two bad
snaps from the center to the Panther
punter gave the Braves another two

Neil Borne and Donald Green accept their checks for the Houston Home Jounal
foottnll contest. They each split the winnings as both picked the tiebreaker exactly
as to how many points would be scored.
My Birds did it in the last
minute. That last drive was simply
incredible.
Miller looked like an All-Pro and
playing Mary Persons.
"We can't relax. It's been lough
and we have the midseason aches
and pains," Stephens said. "They
play discipline football and 1 have
tremendous respect for coach Pitts.'
Mary Persons will run out of the
wishbone formation which
Stephens feels his team will ready
for.
"It's not conventional (Mary Per
sons' offense), but then again, nei
ther is ours," he said. "The trend is
toward the I-fromation for most
teams."
Stephens’ team is still savoring
the secondary," Curkcndall said.
"We want to win every week and
this should not be a factor.'
Faraba agrees. "It shouldn't have
any bearing unless we get the same
teams back on the field," he said. "1
just hope it will be a good game."
Westfield's football team does to

homecoming game.

Sundquist reached on an fielders
choice. A Kaci Williamson single
and another FPD error scored both
of those runners to give the Lady
Hornets a 6-1 lead.
Westfield added one more in the
fifth and three more in the sixth in
ning to net the final 10-1. The Lady
Hornets had only one more hurdle
ahead, one more win over FPD.
FPD would not yield as easily as
they did in the first game in the
championship series.
The Lady Vikings jumped out to
a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kelly
Richardson singled, after two outs
in the inning.
The Lady Hornets closed the gap
to within one in the bottom of the
first inning. Santiago doubled and
Allison Latham singled to score her
to make it FPD 2, Westfield 1.
Hallie Harper added to the FPD
lead in the second inning. She sin

The second half was much differ
ent as the defenses tightened up and
so did Andre Rison. They both rose
to the occasion when the team
needed them.
This week you'll see them do the
the shutout victory over Sumter
County. "It was a good team win
Friday night," he said. "We had a
good team effort. It was probably
the best to date."
But, the Panthers are back work
ing hard at practice hoping to jump
back into the region playoff race.
Stephens isn't looking for another
shutout victory but just a victory.
"The win is what we want, but it
will be a lough game. We're just
playing for us and not for anybody
else," he added. "You can’t make a
mistake against them or they'll hurt
you."
distractions so we’re not taking into
account that they are 1-4 because
they arc a good football team,"
Curkcndall added. "We're healthy
except Doug Massey who has a
torn ligament."
FPD will use a multiple set of
fense while they will use a split
four defense.

male Robin Malone singled.
The "Comeback Kids" came back
and tied it up in the third inning.
April Horsling singled, with two
outs in the inning. Santiago tripled
to score her. Christi Horsting sin
gled to score Santiago and that tied
it up at 3-3.
FPD exploded for three runs in
the fifth inning to lake a 6-3 lead.
The "Comeback Kids" waited
until the sixth inning to make their
curtain call. Trailing 6-3, Westfield
scored four runs in the sixth to seal
the win. Santiago and Christi
Horsting lead off the inning with
back-to-back singles. Latham dou
bled to score Santiago. Graham
singled to score Horsting. Jena
Bishop was called off the bench to
pinch-hit, with Westfield still trail
ing 6-5. She delivered a one out
single that scored Latham to lie the
game. Mandy McDaniel reached on
a fielders choice to score Graham to
when quarterback, Dallas Waldrip
engineered a Panther drive high
lighted by a short run for the
touchdown, Perry was back in the
contest.
Waldrip added the 2-point
conversion and Perry only trailed
18-8 with yet a whole quarter re
maining.
But, the B-Panthers could not get
over this dreaded disease known as
fumblilis and in the fourth quarter
with Perry on their own 15-yard
line, a Brave scooped up a fumble
and scampered in easily to seal the
win.
Coach Glover Gibson felt the
team did good despite the turnovers.
"Dallas played good on both offense
and defense," he said.
Coach Jeff Webb and Max Vick
ers both agreed.
"We got into their territory for
most of the game," Webb said. "We
just kept turning the ball over."
same thing against the mighty
tough Forty-Niners. Yes. here I go
with another crazy prediction, but I
say Atlanta 24, San Francisco 23.
Stephens feels emotion and the
intensity his team will need to win
this game will play a key factor in
the outcome of the game.
"They have a great tradition, plus
the revenge factor will be on their
minds," Stephens said. "It's going
to be a war. They are always ready
to play."
The Panther mentor concluded by
saying that when people mention
Dan Pitts, they mention his name
before they do Mary Persons. They
are synonymous, according to the
coach.
down in the past using the 4-3, but
they have been playing teams that

back to the 4-3."

give Westfield a 7-6 win and a trip
to the GISA AAA Final Four in
Tiflon.
Coach Donna Campbell, talking
about her teams performance on
Saturday said, "These girls being
down and beat, and coming back all
the limes that they did, showed the
most character of any team that I
have ever coached. They had to be
tired but they always reached down
and found a little extra to pull
themselves back up." Campbell
continued, "I was a little worried
after we lost that first game to
FPD, but we battled back."
Westfield will face three other
hurdles on Wednesday, when they
travel to Tifton. The Lady Hornets
will face Stratford at 10 a.m. The
winner of that game will face the
winner of the Tattnall Square and
Pincbrook game. The tournament
will be a double elimination tour
nament.
