Power outage on Tuesday morning leaves many
Houston County residents stumbling in the dark

More than 3,000 Houston
County residents awoke Tuesday
morning, December 18th, to dark
filled rooms, stalled alarm clocks,
and empty automatic coffee makers.
Transfer lines servicing two
Georgia Power substations lost
power at approximately 6:30 a.m.
according to Flint Electric
spokesman Glen Heck,
"We hope no one was late for
City councilmen ponder E-911 question

Ron Olt, operations supervisor of
the County's E-911 system, and
Lee Slripland, the director of the
proram, presented a rc-budgctcd E
-911 program to the Councilmen,
which reduced the cost to the City
from over $124,000 to $31,453.35.
"Perry is unique," according to
Olt. Most cities could simply cease
employing dispatchers at all once a
central dispatching system was pul
into place. But Perry cannot.

substations servicing West Byron
and Fort Valley lost power sending
3,148 homes in the area into total
darkness.
"The cause is still unknown. Us
not at our end. The only problem
we experienced was in receiving the
transfer from Gulf Power," said
Heck.
Spokesmen for Gulf Power were
unavailable for comment.
"As long as we have got a jail,
we’ve got to have those people,"
said Perry Police Chief Frank Si
mons.
Simons did say that E-911 is "a
good system." "I like what they say
they can do for us," he explained.
Oil noted that he and Stripland
were "not here to get you to sign
on the dotted line," but to give in

The Council generally agreed that
the system was needed and that,
until now, the "biggest problem
