k-THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1990
City, from 1A
of a total of 19 new street lights.
Six will be in the New Hope area,
three in the Holly Hills area and
the remainder will be placed along
W.F. Raggins Road. Georgia
Power will provide six new poles
for the lights, and increase the
wattage of the existing lights on
W.F. Raggins Road from 100 to
250.
Ingram then recommend that the
Council pay H.E. Chapman 5360
to paint his building due to prob
lems stemming from the bricking
of the sidewalk.
However, Chapman told
Council "I wont accept a check
from the city." Chapman also
pointed out that the painting was
not the biggest problem, but
rather structural damage which
caused water leaks in his
basement
According to Worrall, "the leak
has been identified since the com
mittee looked at it (the building)."
Ingram recommended then,
instead, that action be delayed and
M.&M. Construction Company,
which contracted the sidewalk
project, be made aware of the
problem and have the chance to
fix it.
The Council then voted to pur
chase an industrial chipper for the
dry trash land fill. Roper again
Indigent defense
expenses revealed
By MIKE PRINCIPATO
Staff Writer
County Public Defender Terry
Everette presented Houston
County Commissioners a check
for nearly $ 19-thousand dollars,
Tuesday, December 18th.
According to Everette, the
check is Houston County's share
of the stale's Indigent Defense
Fund.
Money is collected by the
Georgia Bar Association as part
of lawyers annual dues. Others
may also donate to the fund.
According to Everette,
Georgia's Association of County
Commissioners has been
instrumental this year in helping
to insure continued service to the
poor across the slate.
Guard unit to get
hometown news
dissented, saying "we need to look
at the overall program." He was in
favor of purchasing a chipper, but
only after a burner was also
looked into.
However, Ingram said "we bud
geted $16,000 for a chipper...it is
lime to buy a chipper."
The Conventions and Visitors
Bureau employees had requested to
be put on the City's insurance
plan, with the bureau paying all
costs. The Council passed a
motion made by Ralph Gentry to
add them to the policy.
Council voted to move its first
meeting in January from January
1 to January 3. Council also gave
city employees Monday,
December 24, off.
The request of the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference
to hold their annual Marlin Luther
Kind Day parade in Perry was
granted. The permit for the parade
is contingent upon the approval of
the Department of Transportation.
A public hearing for the re-zon
ing of a plot of land at the 1-75
North and Thompson Road inter
change received no opposition.
The zone was changed from R-l
to M-l.
Corrections,
from 1A
According to Fairchild, HCCI is
classified as a medium security fa
cility. In the past, correction facili
ties were more common, outnum
bering state institutions. Slowly
these numbers have shrunk due to
increasingly violent crimes. Gradu
ally, across the state and the nation,
jails have grown to handle the more
violent offender. Maximum security
facilities now are the more domi
nate means of incarceration.
After lengthy discussion. Com
missioner Jay Walker broke a tic
vote killing the motion. Commis
sioners voiced their interest in pur
suing the matter after more infor
mation was available.
