Panthers grapplers battle it out in Cook
County's Classic; Greene, Jolley place

The Perry Panther wrestling team
traveled to Adel Friday and Saturday
to compete in the 12th annual Hor
net Classic hosted by Cook County
High School. The Panthers finished
with 14 team points.
The tournament was won by
Suwancc High School from
Suwannee, Florida.
Twenty teams attended the tour
nament. With two teams coming
from Florida and many outstanding
teams from the Panther's region.
Etowah High School, which
won the tournament last year was
not in attendance this year to defend
their title.
"It was the toughest compclilon
I’ve seen (at this tournament), said
Coach Tony Thrift.
OuLsatnding efforts were turned in
for die Panthers by Woody Greene
and Mike Jolley. Greene finished
third in the tournament and Jolley
came in fifth.
Two Perry wrestlers advanced
into the second round with wins.

Perry Country Club with a birdie
on the first hole of a sudden-death
playoff.
The foursome finished with a 63
winning over the second place team
of Paul Carroll, Craig Patterson,
Vic Parker and Jane Whipple who
also finished with a 63.
Twenty-two four-man teams were
vying for the title.

Panthers B-teamers get out of
Dodge with hard fought victory

The Perry High School Panthers
jayvee squad went into Dodge
County where only a year ago, they
were blown out.
This lime the results were differ
ent as Perry came away with a 74-
68 victory in Eastman Saturday
night as five players scored in dou
ble figures.
Perry jumped out to a slim 15-14
first period lead and held the lead at
halftime by increasing the lead to a
10 point margin at 34-24.
Dodge County managed to chop
into the lead and trailed only by five
at the end of the third period, 52-47.
Perry held the lead throughout the
fourth period as it was a good team
effort.
Leading scorer for the Panthers
jayvee squad, Michael Lane was
held to 12 points but all 12 came
on four 3-poinlcrs.
Jason Sikes led Perry with 13
points.
H. Trcmaync led Dodge County
with 22.
Perry's next game was a home
encounter Monday evening w ith the
Macon County Bulldogs at 4:30
p.m.

Jayvee Panthers remain
undefeated with victory

The Perry High School Panthers
jayvee squad pushed their record to
5-0 with an 80-65 victory over the
Macon County Bulldogs Monday
night at Perry High School.
Michael Lane poured in a season
high 23 points in leading the tccam
to victory.
For the second consecutive game,
five players were in double figures.
Nine players scored as the Pan
thers depth proved too much for
Macon County.
Jolley and Chris Canion won their
first matches to move on.
Jolley, who wrestles in the 145-
pound class, defeated Sequoyah by
pin in the first period.
In the 160-pound class, Canion
won by pin over Valdosta.
Jim Earhart, at 103, was defeated
by pin by Wakulla, Florida in the
second period.
At 112 pounds, Darrell Passin
ault lost by pin in die second period
to Camden County.
In the 119-pound division, Randy
Mizcll lost to Lowndes County by
a pin in the third period.
In the 125-pound class, Chris
Slone lost by pin in the second pe
riod to Dublin.
Travis Prater, in the 130-pound
class, lost by pin to Cook County
m the second period.
In the 135-pound class, Greene,
who was the number one seed, lost
a 10-9 decision to Lowndes
County.
There was some confusion in the
scoring of Greene’s match. At the
end of the third period, the score

Perry jumped out to a 22-13 first
period lead and increased the lead to
a 10 point margin at intermission,
leading 40-30.
Perry increased the lead in each
quarter as the Panthers took a 63-51
lead heading into the final stanza.
A. Cochran led the Bulldogs with
21 points.

read 10-9 in Greene's favor and the
official raised Greene's hand. There
was a mistake at the scorer's table
and decision was reversed, giving
Lowndes the victory.
At 140-pounds, Stoncy Pilzcr
was defeated 10-8 by Valdosta.
John Rowland, in the 152-pound
division, was defeated by Wakulla
in the first period by pin.
Katori Gordon, at 189-pounds,
lost by pin to Spencer in the first
period.
In the heavyweight division,
Carlos Lester was pinned in the
first period by Tift County.
In the second round, Jolley was
defeated by Tift County, 8-7.
Canion lost by pin to Lafayette
in the first period.
The Panthers had several
wrestlers to compete in the
wrcstlcbacks. Green, Jolley, Lester
and Canion all competed in the
loser's bracket.
Greene advanced to the second
round by receiving a forfeit.
Jolley defeated Cook Couly by
pin in the third period to move into

Lester won by a second period

In the second round of the
wresllcbacks, Perry had two of its
three wrestlers advance into the
third period of the loser's bracket.
Greene was on the winning end
of a 15-7 decicion over Wakulla.
Jolley defeated West Laurens by
pin in the second period.
Lester was defeated by Coffee
County by pin in the second period.
In the third round, Greene ad
vanced into the consolation finals,
for third and fourth place, by pin
ning Baker in the third period.
Jolley was eliminated by
Spencer. Jolley lost a lough 18-11
decision.
In the consolation finals, Greene
faced Lowndes County, the wrestler
who eliminated Greene from the
regular bracket.

Northrop jumped out to a 13-6
lead after one period, but Opposi
tion's defense stiffened in the second
period and the team came back to
take a 19-13 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Hodge con
nected with Noles for a touchdown
and the two teams went into the fi
nal period tied at 31.

Out on Bail will play the late
game at 3:00 p.m. against Opposi
tion while Northrop will play the
2:00 p.m. contest against Dansby's.
