One more Lady Bulldog basket
and two free throws increased the
lead back to seven but Williams
scored with 24 seconds left and after
a steal, she was fouled and hit both
free throws.
Andrea Kitchens sealed the win
with a backet with six seconds left.
"We scored four points the third
quarter. Defensively, I thought we
played pretty good," said Perry
High School Lady Panther Head
Coach James Kinchen, "They got
ahead and started sitting on the ball.
We had to come out on them and
they went inside to the big girl.
They had a couple girls that should
be at least six feet. We didn't play
that bad. We just can’t score. We
start off scoring fairly easy at the
beginning because they were letting
Varsity Action
lift especially down the stretch,"
Thomas said. "Sterling’s quickness
and his shooting ability can be a
big plus for us. We haled to lose
him last week but he got sick.
That's why he didn't play more
minutes in the first half."
Perry started off the contest with
a quick 4-0 lead on a Green basket
and a Marvin Stokcling jump shot,
but Macon County cut that deficit
to one point at 6-5. Perry built the
lead back and lead 12-8 at the end of
the first period.
Edwards hit with 5:15 left in the
half, but Macon County increased
the lead to seven at 22-15.
The lead went to nine points at
32-23, but Edwads and Hayward

half to bring Perry within five at
32-27.

Coach Kinchcn added that the
team shoots the ball everyday in
practice 50 times (five sets of ten
around the perimeter), but the
shooting just isn't there in the
games.
"Sometime you're blessed with
them and sometime you're not,"
Kinchen said. "All we’ll do is keep
practicing shooting and hope that
after a while we get somebody that
can shoot."
Perry finished the game shooting
8-16 from the free throw line while
Macon County shot 18-26.

Turnovers hurt Panthers as
Dodge County scalps Perry

BYU signee, Craig Wilcox led
three Dodge County players in
double figures as the Indians de
feated the Perry High School Pan
thers 80-62 Saturday in Eastman.
Wilcox led all scorers with 20
points while J. King and M.
Etheridge each chipped in with 17
points.
Perry jumped out to a quick 10-4
lead but the Dodge County press
forced 37 turnovers and Perry could
not mount any consistence offense.
Dodge County outscored Perry
17-6 the rest of the period to take a
21-16 lead into the second quarter.
"You can look at the lift Setarvin
(Jackson) 'gave us in the first half.
We ran the break and kicked out and
went," said Panthers Head Coach
Carl Thomas. "We pressed them
well enough to really have won
handily. We pressed them 12 times
and they had eight turnovers."
In the second period, Dodge
County used a 19-13 period to in
crease the lead to 11 points at 40-
29.
Jackson scored all of his 13
points in the first half.
"They shot one layup, made one
layup while we were pressing. We
fouled twice, they got it up the
floor one lime and set up their of
fense and they scored a layup the

to set up the press," Thomas added.

Free throws prove to be the downfall as
Lady Panthers routed by Dodge County
By MARK BLUMEN

Poor free throw shooting was the
downfall of the Perry High School
Lady Panthers Saturday night when
the Dodge County Squaws jumped
out to an early lead and never
looked back posting a 57-40 victory
in Eastman.
Perry went 1-14 in the first half
and 6-21 for the game.
Perry fell behind 20-7 after one
period and 36-19 at intermission.
In the third period, Perry could
only manage to ihm two points off

against their press. It was different
Friday night. Central’s press hurt
us. But, with Ken out of there Fri
day night the subs weren’t in the
places they needed to be and that’s
why we had trouble attacking Cen
tral’s press, people were out of po
sition. We had people in position
against Dodge. Dodge just executed.
Dodge has good personnel. That’s
going to be a good game with
Dodge and Central in the tourna
ment."
Dodge County continued the on
slaught in the third period with a
22-14 run that broke the game wide
open. Dodge County led 62-40
heading into the final frame.
With one minute gone by in the
final frame both teams emptied the
benches.
Eric Richardson came in to score
10 points in the period against the
Indians substitutes.
"He (Richardson) looked real
good against their reserves. If
Dodge’s reserves come up here, it
looks like he can get 40 but if he
plays against Dodge's first team, he
looked just as bad as everybody
else. He had no points and two or
three turnovers. It wasn't a very
pretty game. We missed a lot of
easy shots," he explained. "We
looked like a wreck team with a W
not just an R.”
Another factor was foul trouble
as Tazari Green picked up early
fouls.
the lead and trailed 44-29 heading
into the final period.
Deidre Williams led the way with
18 points for the Lady Panthers. No
one else was in double figures.
Albertina Davis, Monica
Kendrick and Demetrius Ragin all
hit 3-pointers for the Lady Panthers
but the poor shooting was also a
factor in the loss.
"We have problems scoring. I
knew this all along," said Perry
High School Lady Panthers Head
Coach James Kinchens. "We just
don't have anybody that can pul it
in the basket. That's just point
"It seems like every lime we go
out their and play, the other team is
shooting the bonus after two min
utes of the first quarter," Thomas
said. "1 don't understand it. They
pressed us the whole game. It
wasn't a well called game."
Ken Sikes again sat out for his
second of three games and Thomas
felt the lack of another experienced
player contributed to some of the
turnovers.
"They hurt us real bad with their
offense rebounding. They had about
eight pul backs for baskets," he
added. "We haven’t had that happen
to us this year. That shows you
some of the ways we broke down.
They hit five three pointers, they
hit the offensive boards for put
backs. We had 37 turnovers against
their press. It kind of lets you know
they dominated the game really
from lop to bottom. The only
bright spots I can sec out of the
entire situation was that we ran the
break well, we pressed very effec
tively and we got off to a good
start. But, one point in the fourth
quarter we were down 23 to 25
points in spite of us pressing them
effectively. We missed Kenny on
the boards."

blank. Free throw shooting, we had
some on the line, but we just
couldn't pul it in the basket. We
just don't have any natural shoot
ers."
The loss snapped Perry's three
game winning streak. The Lady
Panthers arc now 3-2 and will try to
get back on the winning track
Monday with a contest against the
Macon County Lady Bulldogs.
