THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 13, 1991

Tourney, from 1B —
Ridley had some time at point
guard in the Panthers last away
game with Upson County.
"This is an area that Jeff needs to
improve in," Thomas explained. "1
don't know what Americus is going
to do to us. If Americus just goes
down the floor and plays a 1-3-1
zone or plays on a halfcourt level
like they have chosen in the past,
Jeff is not going to have any tant
ble. Now, if they make it a full
court game and decide to press us,
now those decisions to be made
come into focus."
T homas feels that Americus will
press but adds that the three days to
prepare for the tournament are go
ing to be devoted for Sumter
County, not to look past Americus.
When 1 say, we are going to
JoneS 5 from 1B
he explained. As Casey Stengel
once said If a kid can do some
thing, than do it, but if a kid can’t
do it, there is no sense in trying to
make him do if. There is no sense
in trying to make a kid do some
thing he can t do. I want to do ev
erything 1 can to win, but you have
to coach baseball players and not
just baseball sometimes."
Jones feels that this team will
show a little speed and power and
that this year s Panthers will be ag
gressive.
Perry lost one starting pitcher in
Josten Clark, one part time pitcher-
First baseman in Robert Aitkens
and right fielder Marc Lee.
The Panthers return everybody
else including ace of the pitching
staff Sikes.
New to the squad will be Jones’
son Sy, who could be the second
starting pitcher Perry is looking
for.
"He won six games for us last
year and did a good job," he said.
"He’s a smart pitcher. He's heady.
What he can do is if he throws 80
miles an hour he can come back
with a breaking ball. If he throws
them at the right time, he can keep
the hitters off balance."
Jones explained that the squad his
son had last year made some mis
Blumen, from 1B
have proven they arc bonafide scor
ers with John Lartiberth hitting a
few baskets to help out.
Last Friday night 1 would have to
say that I witnessed probably one of
the two best games since 1 came to
Perry.
Before this game, I’d have to say
that the Perry/Jackson game of a
year ago when Ken Sikes hiL the
winning basket would rank to be
the olher one.
Remember, I was out of town
this year when the Panthers came
back against Sumter County at
home.
But, Westfield's Shane Hester
took a rebound and laid the ball in
at the buzzer.
Boy, they have been talking
about that game ever since.
It was magnificent the way the
Victory, from 1B
in the third period including two
free throws with 16 seconds left to
give the Lady Hornets their largest
lead of 12 points at 47-35.
Westfield led by 10 points at 47-
37 heading into the final frame.
Tattnall closed the margin to six
points at 47-41 with 6:32 left but
Westfield regrouped and went back
to their game plan.
What was that? "Look to Christi
Horsting first and if it’s not there,
someone else score, " Campbell
explained.
Horsting rebounded the ball three
times to get one basket at the 4:37
mark of the period to build the lead
to 51-43.
Tabatha Goss hit a free throw
with 3:50 left but on her second at
tempt, Santiago rebounded the ball
tor a basket and a Lady Hornets 11
point lead at 54-43.
Westfield hit five of the last six
tree throws down the stretch to seal
the victory.

oi uic GHSA 4AA South subregion tournament in Buena Vista at 5:30

Friday, February 15
Basketball: Pending a victory in Thursday's game. Perry will play at
8:30 p.m. vs. Sumter/Upson winner. Lady Panthers (pending a victory
Thursday) will play at 7:00 p.m. vs. Americus/Upson winner.
preparc for Sumter, I have enough
time to do some things for Ameri
cus," he added. "We'll not play the
same style Thursday that we'll play
Friday. We’ll have something in
store Friday but you have to win
Thursday."
Perry's probable starting lineup
for Americus will start Sterling
Hayward, Jeff Ridley, Derrick Ed
wards, Tazari Green and Ken Sikes.
With a win Thursday and Friday,
Perry will play host Tri-County,
who is currently on a nine game
winning streak.
Since starting 8-5 on the year,
the Eagles have won nine straight
posting a 17-5 record.
"Once you get a little closer to
the next Saturday," he explained.
"You have one outstanding team at
takes but feels the Panthers' defense
should help the pitching staff out a
great deal.
We may move people to differ
ent spots. 1 think we have the peo
ple that can play short, second and
third and catch and knock down
most ground balls," Jones noted.
That's what you got to play as
percentages anyways. You're not
going to be 100 percent right all
the time but it you do what you got
to do, you'll be successful. 1 think
with the backup he'll have here, he
can be pretty successful. Then you
have some young kids like Dallas
Waldrip and Jason Sikes."
With many of the players who
intend playing still on the basket
ball squad, Jones feels these young
players arc going to have to con
tribute early.
We have three weeks and we're
playing. I may have to use some of
these young kids," he said. "I’m not
afraid to do that. I’ve always felt
that it a kid can get the job done,
I'm not afraid to use him.”
Jones only saw the games last
year with Fitzgerald and one with
Robert E. Lee so he is going to
have to get Lo know his squad.
"Ken is the only one that I've
seen other than Sy," he explained.
’There will be several positions
team didn’t panic when John Barry
i Cox hit a basket and drew a foul
with six seconds left,
i Austin Kirby look ihc ball up ihe
court like a pro and was happy to
i take the final shot.
Cater Pierce was very proud of
the way his sophomore played in
the clutch.
Hester, ironically is a sophomore
as well.
The Hornets have a tough road
ahead of them buL 1 believe they
could be a surprise in tile playoffs.
Pierce will have his squad ready
because I know Cater doesn’t like to
lose.
As for the Lady Hornets, whaL
more can you say.
Donna has taken almost the same
squad that finished 8-15 a year ago
: and lumed it around.
"I tell you, we beat a very good
team," she said. "They were state
champs last year and they are hav
ing another good season this year.
I'm ecstatic. I’m just very happy."
Now, the Lady Hornets win wait
to see if they are the number one
seed for the tournament in Forsyth
next week. A coin toss Monday
will decide because Westfield is 6-2.
Flint River and Tattnall are both
5-2 but will meet on Friday night.
The winner will be tied with the
Lady Hornets and the flip of the
coin will decide the number one
seed.

tournament is at Mary Persons."
>
: Confidence will be high for the
Bulldogs because the tournament is
on their home court.
. "Still, I'd rather play Mary Per
sons than Manchester," he ex
plained. "Although ilve seen them
both play, I feel there arc some
. things we can do successfully
t against both teams."
Os Manchester's three losses, two
' were to Central Talbotton and the
other was to Mary Persons by nine
t points at Mary Persons.
that we'll move from place to place.
It's not going to be something that
'do you want to do this' but it's
what’s best for the team."
He added that role players will be
just as important as the starters and
that included a pinch runner in the
last inning.
"Whether they are a starter or not
a starter, it's if you help the team
win, that's the difference," he said. !
"I hope these kids will understand
that. I think they do. 1 feel real
good about the type kids we have."
Jones concluded by saying that j
this year was going to be a fun
year.
"I'm a firm believer in doing
things right and just being the best r
person you can be and that’s what I
hope I teach as well as baseball," he
finished. "I hope I give them an
opportunity where the excel in
baseball where they put a little hard
work and determination that they
may play somewhere beyond high
school.”
The Panthers are planning to
have some special promotion such
as cap day, home run inning where
if a home run is hit in a certain in
ning a prize will be awarded to a
lucky fan, and the national anthem
will be sung by athletic director,
John Stephens.
Currently the Lady Hornets are
13-5 just before the Taiinali game
but ean win the region with a vic
tory Tuesday night.
April Horsling has come on
strong as ol' late and picked up slack
when sister Chrisli is not producing
(which isn't that often).
Both have given the Lady Hor
nets that extra scorer when Erica
Graham and Angela Santiago aren't
scoring.
Fabatha Goss has shown her
ability to run the team from the
point guard position and now Laura
Langston has been giving Westfield
some valuable minutes off the
bench. Look out because West
field s ladies could be dangerous
come region time.

Hornets, from 2B
3-pointer but Tattnall scored the
last six points of the period to lead
5742 heading into the final frame.
Scott for the third period of the
game answered with the first two
baskets.
Westfield tried to fight their way
back into the contest with scrappy
defense but the Trojans built the
lead to as many as 20 points at 64-
44.
Lamberth's two free throws with
4:52 left gave the Hornets life as
Tattnall led 70-55 but a 9-3 run
sealed the win.
"They're good. You can't take it
away from them," Pierce said. "It’s
kind of disheartening."
Westfield will now wait to see
who they play in the region tour

NAURS Service Hours M-F 8:00*5:30 PM - Saturday 8:00*12:00
nament next week at Monroe
Academy.
Westfield will be either the num
ber two or three seed in the tourna
ment.
The Hornets could play either
Mt. De Sales or Monroe Academy
pending the outcome of their game
Friday night.
A Monroe victory would set up a
coin toss between Monroe and Mt.
De Sales to see who plays West
field.
A Mt. DeSales win would set up
a coin toss to see who is number
two and who is number three.
Either way the two would meet.
The only thing this would decide is
which uniform the Hornets would
wear.
