Houston County second
with schools of excellence
By ALAN WILLIS
Staff Writer
Houston County has won the
school of excellence award 12 times
with 11 different schools in 18 at
tempts.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr.
Harold Chapman told the Board of
Education that the County’s 67 per
cent success rate was only bested by
Gwinnett County.
He also pointed out that Warner
Robins High School is still in
competition for recognition as a
national school of excellence.
Chapman's report to the Board
also noted that the renovations at
Pearl Stevens are going according
to schedule, "those who stayed will
be moving into a renovated wing,"
he said.
Next years budget is not yet firm
in Atlanta, but Chapman said "I
don't think we’re going to the
poorhouse, but I don't think we'll
have any luxuries." Chapman noted
that was a state-wide condition.
The final tally of next year's ju
nior class at Houston County High
School was announced to the board.
69 students had opted to remain at
their current schools, while 150
others chose to go to the new
school.
Comments from the board mem
bers included Skip Talbert's com
mendation of the DARE program.
"It is amazing the affect the officers
have had on the kids," said Talbert.
He had attended the recent DARE
graduation, and called it "an emo
tional time for the kids."
Zell Blackmon echoed his praise
for DARE and said he believed "the
citizens... are ready to do what is
necessary to continue the quality of
the system."
