A 12-month school year may
loom on the horizon for Houston
County students.
State-wide excitement within
Georgia’s educational system, began
early this month, following a
decision by College Park educators
to begin a 12-month education cal
endar in mid-July.
"We have no plans to consider
such a move right now," said Su
perintendent Harold Chapman. "But
we’re not ruling it out. We would
first need a mandate from the par
ents."
Orange Park residents over
whelming supported a 12-month
education referendum in January.
Approximately 92-percent of voting
residents favored year-round
classes.
Under the College Park system,
180-days of classes would be spread
over 12-months. Georgia's standard
school year calendar is 9-months.
Under the Orange Park calendar,
the academic year would consist of
four quarters separated by three
three-week breaks and a six-week
summer vacation.
Nationally, year-round schooling
has drawn a variety of supporters.
Some feel year-round classes are a
viable alternative to current over
crowded conditions.
Many dual income households 1
consider the concept a positive step
in helping plan family vacations.
Educators agree the concept has
merit. Studies show in areas where
year-round education exists, student
retention levels increase dramati
cally. .. ..
Experts feel this is because stu
dents have less time to forget what
they learned the previous year.
College Park is the first Georgia
education system to convert to the
12-month school calendar year.
According to Chapman, should
the parents request a change, the
county would consider the option.
However, unlike Orange Park, con
version to a year-round school year
would have to occur county-wide.
