Pilot program will go into place at Morningside
Elementary next year, students learn 'global' view
By ALAN WILLIS
Staff WRiter
Marcia Talbert outlined the new
"Continuous Success" pilot pro
gram will go into place at Morn
ingside Elementary School next
year for grades kindergarten through
third.
The program utilizes the "global”
view of how students learn, and
utilizes the knowledge that neither
retention nor social promotion
work.
The program would meed the
needs of the child at his or her peer
group level but at their own pace.
Morningside was chosen because
of its socio- economic mix and the
entire restructuring the school was
going to have to undergo anyway.
"The program looks at the family
concept of schooling," said Talbert.
In continuous success, there would
be a family of grades in a wing.

However, Talbert stressed "we will
still have classrooms."
Still, the goal would be to keep
the students in the same family of
classrooms throughout there stay at
the school.
Talbert pointed out one advantage
to starting the program at
Morningside, saying "it will cost
no money."
Talbert answered Board member
Shirley Lowery's questions about
grading procedures, saying "we
hope to do some innovative things
with grading."
Board member Zell Blackmon
expressed some concern about
grouping students, saying "there is
a lot of difference between a kindcr
gartner and a third grader." How
ever, Talbert said the social prob
lems would be minimized because
classroom integrity would be re
tained.

Blackmon noted the program may
"solve some of the problems we
have with social promotion."
Talbert said the system utilized a
"child-centered curriculum," and
noted that students would continue
to be grouped by age. She pointed
out that there would be a mix of at
risk students and other students and
the the University of Georgia would
assist in evaluating the program.
"It usually takes about two years
to evaluate," said Talbert, answer
ing Blackmon's question concerning
when it would be possible to gage
the success of the program.
Dr. Harold Chapman, Superin
tendent, said "this is a pilot pro
gram, a lot of study has gone into
it." Chapman noted that he hopes
the program is enough of a success
that "other schools will to have it."
