professional catches a Russian Boar
Hunters in Georgia who go after
the wi Id boar use many breeds of
dogs for the hunt. They vary widely
from mongral dogs from the dog
pound to registered breeds which
win the New York Kennell Club
show each year.
One of the most unusual breeds
that we use is the Norwegian Elk
Hound.
This breed has quickly become
our favorite dog for tracking and
baying the wild boar.
The Elk Hound is usually black
or mouse grey, chunky in build,
with a sharp muzzle, pointed ears,
tightly curled tail and a thick long
coat of hair.
Wildlife Federation FISHARAMA comes to
the Georgia Agricenter next weekend
When it comes to getting ready
for fishing season, Georgia sports
men know that the place to start is
the Georgia Wildlife Federation's
annual Perry FISHARAMA.
One of the biggest and best
shows of its kind in the Southeast,
the FISHARAMA enjoys a reputa
tioon among anglers for offering
the latest in fishing equipment and
technigues.
Whether you're in the mark for
anew bass boat, a fishing rod or the
hottest new fishing lures and lines,
you’re sure to find what you're
looking for at the FISHARAMA.

Lawson shares tales of life on pond
In his 40 years of fishing experi
ence, Chuck Lawson has found
ponds much productive and fertile
than large reservoirs.
"If you want to crank up your big
boat and have fun, large reservoirs
are great, but if you really want to
catch a wallhjanger, a large pond is
the place to go."
He feels that today's well
equipped angler really needs three
boat, a 10-footer for small ponds
and stream, a 12-footer for medium
to large ponds and a 17- to 19-
footer for reservoir fishing.
For Lawson, it's his 12-foot jo
hboat equipped with a Minn-Kota
trolling motor and built-in depth
finder that sees the most action.
Beginning in December, when
the bass are in prime condition,
Lawson hauls his boat all over
central Georgia to various ponds.
He looks for traditional hot
spots, such as points and shallow
feeding grounds to deepwwater
sanctuaries.
Once he locates such an area, he
anchors the boat and settles down

He is a small dog usually weigh
ing from 25 to 40 pounds.
The Elk Hound is widely used as
a show dog and pet in cities, but he
is equally at home in the woods.
He is an excellent companion as
he has a very quiet affectionate na
ture.
The Elk Hound was originally
used in Norway to hunt and bay up
sporting goods stores in one day,"
noted Georgia Wildlife Federation
Executive Vice President Jerry Mc-
Collum. "If you're interested in
what's new for the upcoming sea
son at the best possible prices, then
the Perry FISHARAMA is the
place to be."
Held each February, the 1991
edition this February 22-24 is cer
tain to be a crowd pleaser. Amid the
spacious, heated surroundings of the
Georgia Agricenter (1-75 at Exit 42)
fishing enthusiasts will find scores
of exhibits, including record catch
trophies and some of the best taxi

He lets the shiner run free with
out a cork and carefully wattches
the line.
He feels that while artificials are
dandy, shiners are like candy to big
bass and are their natural food.
Some of his big bass were caught
on artificials, but most hit shiners.
Because wild shiners are difficult
and time consuming to catch. Law
son uses commercially raised ones
from .Arkansas that he sells through
his store. These store-bought shin
ers are not as lively as wild ones,
but they are held in tankds to clean
out their systems and won't foul the
water later in the fisherman's bait
tank. Consequently, this lengthens
their life span.
Chuck anchors his boat in deeper
water and attempts to put th shiner

Elk Hound will stop barking until
the boar turns to fight again.
It is very interesting and exciting
to see the small dogs work a boar.
One will get in fromt and one
behind him and they will bark and
snap causing the boar to spin
around and stay in one spot.
It is amazing that these small
dogs from the land of the trolls and
midnight sun can bring such a large
animal such as a moose or wild
boar to a stop for the hunter.
If you want a great companion

pounds are oddities, and true mon
sters bass of over 15 pounds are
freaks of nature.
One state fisheries biologist es
timated that only one bass in 800 is
a 10 pounder, while another sug
gested that ration was much too
conservative and should be higher!
"The American Fishing Tackle
Manufacturers Association claims
that $164,000 of fishing tackle is
sold for each 10-pound bass caught
in America, and if the fisherman
who breaks the record is any kind of
businessman, the new world record
bass would be worth at least a mil
lion dollars," Lawson pointed out.
"But even people who have tried to
raise a record bass in holding tanks
or ponds have failed to produce a
record, so that tells you a lot."
In his 40 years of studying the art
and practice angling, Lawon has
talked to thousands of customers
and blended in his own experiences
to derive several personal "fishing
truths."
Morning fishing is fine but most
