Pitching, from 2B
He added that the experience his
starters have is minimal and that
they can not try to hit the comers
or it could be a "walk-a-thon."
Three pitchers that may be relied
upon heavily this year are Bubba
Gibbs, Jamey Watson and Danny
Perfect.
"Watson, Gibbs and Perfect all
have a little bit of pitching experi
ence," he explained. "Although you
could say they have experience in
the youth leagues. Lon Talton is
another one although he is just a
freshman. He could come in and
help us in spots. I don’t look for

" Early on, I'd have to say the
better sticks are Watson (Jamey
Watson), Gibbs (Bubba Gibbs) and
Danny Perfect," Brown said. "Last
year the offense was there at times
and then in other ball games it
looked like they had left it in the
dressing room. We're going to
spend a lot of time swinging the
sticks in practice between now and
March 14. I want the kids to go to
the plate confident and I want them
to want to hit the ball. I'd rather see
them go up there and strike out
than look for a walk."
The Hornets have many players
that, once they get on base have the
speed to "make things happen."
"We're going to try to take
chances when the opportunity is
there," Brown added. "We'll try to
generate some runs through the
back door. We're going to probably
try to create runs for ourselves in a
lot of situations. Going into the
season I just don't feel like we have
the people in our lineup that can set
the table for one person to come up
and hit one out of the yard. It's go
ing to be a situation where we get a
runner on first base, move him over
to second base and then try to get
him home on a basehit."
feel like by the time we play five
ball games into the season and we
begin the region schedule, I really
look to be counting on Gamble and
Blumen, from ib
packing it up for the winter.
I have given him a few sugges
tions on how to get McCullers out
of the game but for some odd rea
son he doesn't want to use it.
Well, if it comes down to an
overtime game, Coach take my ad
vice.
If it's a matter of moving on or
going home, 1 would use this
gimmick.
No I'm just joking but the one
way in all seriousness is to take it
right at him and Thomas added that
this is what the team is going to
do.
He also feels that Griffin and
Pope are two players that can hurt
his squad as well as McCullers.
Griffin fouled out of the both
games that Perry played the Rams
and in Sumter County he was held
scoreless.
Trussell, from 3B
to just fish as often as possible in
stead of waiting for "just the right
time."
Never think that bass will hit
just one hot lure. They often strike
a wide range of baits, but particu
larly fisherman only use one lure.
Obviously the result will be that
"the fish are really hitting that
lure.”
Bass do have memories. When
catfish are conditioned to being fed
to the accompanimentof banging
pans, they will soon surface to feed
just when they hear the pans bang
ing.
Bass remember things in the
same manner. For example a bass
will usually only strike a topwater
lure once, but quickly cast a plastic
worm near him and he will often
strike it becasue it is diffemet food.
Bass know how their prey act in
the wwater, thus artiifcial baits
should be fished as naturally as
possible.
Plenty of baitfish in a pond usu
ally means the bas are in good con
dition and they strike when they are
hungry.
Some anglers think the presence
of abundant baitfish means angling
is poor, but it is not so.
Chuck Lawson is in the process
of retiring and he readily admits that
he has been very lucky man. He has

Lon to be a major factor in our
pitching."
Others that will probably vie for
a pitching position will be Shane
Hester and Phillip Anderson, both
of whom are currently playing for
the Hornets basketball team
Backing up the pitchers will be
the catchers Jeremy Wilson, John
Hulbcrt and Jeff Dehem.
Leading cadidate for the catching
position will be Wilson, who
caught last year on the jayvee
squad.
"He is a very capable defensive
catcher and we're going to spend a
Hawk quite a bit, for leadership as
well as performance."
Brown feels that Tattnall and Mt.
DeSales should be one of the fa
vorites in this year's region, but
The Hornets will not rely on the
long ball but Brown thinks some
one may come through with a
home run "every now and then."
"I still think we have a team that
is capable of scoring four or five
runs a ball game," he said. "We're
going to try to be creative on the
basepaths and see what happens.
We're going to take advantage of
opportunities that are given to us."
Defensively, the Hornets will
have John Gamble and Joey Hawk
in the outfield with Gibbs, when
not pitching playing some infield.
Others that will sure up the de
fense will be Lon Talton, Phillip
Anderson, Jeremy Wilson, and Brad
Dehem.
Brown noted that Talton is a
good solid shortstop.
"I've watched him ever since he
was 10- or 11-years old in little
league," he said. "I know what he is
capable of at shortstop. I imagine
he could also play some outfield for
us."
The Hornets are looking for a lot
out of Gamble and Hawk, both of
them started for the team as
sophomores.
"Maybe not early in the year be
After watching the Upson-Sumter
game Thursday night with Thomas,
we both noticed that Sumter is very
susceptible to the trap without
McCullers in the lineup.
If Perry could get him in foul
trouble, the Panthers are going to
have their way.
If not they better control him like
they did with Marcus Little of
Central.
Sure Perry lost that game but
Little did not take over like Kenny
Anderson or a Chris Jackson would.
Control McCullers and hold him
to maybe 18-22 points and Perry
will win.
Don't control him and let him
score 30-35 points and Perry could
be blown out.
This would be a sad situation for
their seniors. I especially would feel
bad for two guys in particular,
very supportive wife who still
brags on his fish, even after she has
seen him bring home hundreds.
A bypass heart operation recently
gave him a new lease on life, and
he does not intend to waste a
minute.
He intends to spend more time
fishing because he finds it enjoy

cause they won't have as much
practice time," Brown explained. "I
feels his team as well as Monroe
and Hint River could be a surprise.
"When we went up (to Tattnall)
for the basketball game Tuesday
night, they had 32 boys out for
baseball," Brown said, "they have
an advantage with numbers and Mt.
DeSales is not far behind. I would
have to consider those two to be the
early favorites. We're not conceding
anything yet because the first pitch
hasn’t even been made yet."
The Hornets will have 15 players
on the varsity squad and the
remaining 13 will be on B-team.
"It could be a situation where a
handfull of them will play on both
of them (varsity and jayvee)," he
explained. "If for no other reason
than numbers. Our first few days of
practice will sort of be for a trying
out period and after a week we'll
make some decisions as to who
will play where and on what team."
Cater Pierce will be the jayvee
coach for the Hornets as well as as
sistant varsity coach.
"I'd like to think that it will be a
situation where he and I are doing it
together," Brown said. "We want to
work together. We're good friends
and we want to continue to work
together as opposed to one of
working for the other. We've
worked together in basketball and
I'd like to keep it that way in the
Spring.”
Robert Grace and Ken Sikes.
Both have had a tough three years
for Coach Carl Thomas and both
want to go out winners very badly.
The only way they'll do that is to
win a state championship.
Hey guys. I have faith in you.
Good Luck.
I also don't want to forget the
Lady Panthers. Good Luck to you

out on the losing end. Win one for
him as well.
He is really a person that deserves
to go out on a winning note.
You better contain Phyllis Baker

one with Peach County.
I really expect we'll be going up
to Mary Persons next week or at
least I hope so.
