Cool shades .
Patriotic theme expected to
roll in bucks for Exchange Club
By ALAN WILLIS
Staff Writer
The Perry Exchange Club will be
selling a new kind of window
shade. In the past, the club has sold
shades with college emblems. It
will continue to do so. But it will
add a patriotic shade, announcing
"Stars and Strips Forever" to its
stock.
The proceeds from the ten dollar
window shades go to the Rainbow
House. Based in Warner Robins,
Rainbow House provides help for
abused children throughout Houston
County. Donating the monies to
the house is in keeping with the
clubs main theme of child abuse
prevention.
Sharing her appreciation for the
clubs efforts, and updating them on
activities at the Rainbow House,
Meg Couillard spoke to the club
Thursday at its weekly meeting.
Couillard described two new pro
grams, one of which has started and
the other will hopefully begin
soon. The first is a counseling pro-

gram in the schools designed to j
teach children about their emotional I
needs
"We were able to provide each
school with a tape," said Couillard.
The tape in question is the highly
popular video "What to do About I
Fear." It covers fear and the emo
tions that go with it, such as anxi
ety and anguish.
"The kids eat it up,” noted
Couillard.
Another program which Couillard
said is popular among the students |
is a puppet show about safety rules.
The show encourages "a lot of par
ticipation from the children," said
Couillard who pointed out that they
are "learning and listening."
The show is performed for the
kindergarten through second grade
students, and is "for all kids, not
just abused kids."
The safety show was bom out of
increasing concern for latchkey
children in the schools and is "real
good for the schools," according to
Couillard.

before I began the six years of college train

locations where light pressure can bring
In addition to my doctorate, I have a degree

the advances in this rapidly changing field.

Meg Couillard and Charles Lewis
Couillard also mentioned that the
"good touch, bad touch" program is
in the works for Houston County.
The program is designed to help
children recognize sexual abuse
when it happens.
The "Bearing it up" program is
one that the Rainbow House hopes
to be able to start in the County.
The idea is to provide Police, Fire
and Emergency Medical Technicians
with teddy bears to give to panick-
ing children so emergency workers
can attend to the needs of the chil
dren’s parents.
"We’re trying to figure out how
to do it," said Couillard. The ques
tion is how to pay for the program
Couillard pointed out that
"programs like these help more
children." She would like Rainbow
House to become a conversational
name, but noted it is "much better
known now than in the past.”
Even though the next couple of
years promise to be difficult finan
cially, for all non-profit organiza
tions, Rainbow House is expand
ing. An expansion is planned and
ground breaking is expected on
March first.
The Rainbow House depends on
private donations like the one it
gets from the Exchange club. Al
though Couillard did not have the
exact figures of the clubs total do
nations over the past several years,
she said "it averages about $2,500
per year."
LaLeche to meet
The Perry La Leche League will
meet March 11 at 7 p.m.

the advantages of breast feeding.
Dannenberg has just completed
her training to become a La Leche
leader.
