The Knicks became the first team to go undefeated in the inaugural Perry Rec.
basketball league. They were Damien Simon, Travis Cantrell, O’Shauana
Whitehurst, Dwayne Kinchen, John Brewer, Marina Hicks, Eddie King, Shawn
Padgett.
BlUm&n, from 1B
body around here always tells me
how great these players are.
I see them at times look like
world beaters and other times, I see
them look like a Recreation team.
The good teams are good enough
to put away the bad teams early and
never let them challenge for an up
set.
When a good team plays another
good team, the team should pull
out at least half of the victories.
These guys weren't good enough
Preview, fom 1 b
(to open tournament play)," Pierce
said. "I don't think this is an easy
one. Those two games that we
beat them by one point, they have
no bearing now. They know that.
It's always tough to beat a team
three times especially when you’re
evenly matched. With two one
point wins, you are definitely
evenly matched. I'm sure they are
going to adjust some ways and
we're going to adjust. We just
have to go out and play hard."
The Hornets promoted the bas
ketball team Monday in hopes of
drawing some of the school
support by having a student
faculty game.
"It gave the boys another game
situation type thing. We haven't
played in eight or nine days since
Tattnall," Pierce explained. "Plus,
it gave some of the others some
playing time and trying to
promote the basketball team to
students who might not get to
come out and see them play."
Westfield had two boys named
to the All-Region team Monday at
the region meeting. They were
John Gamble and Andy Sparrow.
Sumter, from 1 b
Sikes answered with a 3-point
play to give Perry their last lead at
65-64.
Sikes picked up his fourth foul
and McCuller hit both ends of his
free thows.
After a short rest, Sikes came
back in a with 3:43 left in the
game, Sikes fouled out.
Derrick Edwards hit one free
throw to trim the lead to to one
point at 67-66 but Sumter County
increased the lead to 76-67 with
1:36 left in the game.
Green brought Perry within five
at 78-73 with 1:03 left but Sumter
County went 5-6 from the line in
the last minute to seal the victory.
"We stayed in foul trouble
throughout but it really developed
late in some areas,” Thomas said.
"Ken Sikes really was never in foul
trouble."
Stung, from 1B-
to have gone into overtime. We
probably would have lost because
we didn't have any rebounders left."
Four Lady Panthers fouled out
and Williams was held to her sea
son low of four points.
Perry finished the year with a 16-
9 record and the game marked the
to put away Jackson, Warner
Robins, Peach County, or Crawford
County. So I just want to conclude
by saying these guys are good peo
ple, good ball players, I have no
bad things to say about them, but
(you knew there would be a but) to
the people who keep telling me
how great these guys are in basket
ball, these guys are NOT state
championship material.
I can not see a 13-12 team win-
Wade Hardy and John Lamberth
were named honorable mention.
In the girls brackets, the Lady
Hornets lost a coin flip for the
number one seed and will take the
number two seed to face the Flint
River Lady Wildcats Thursday at
4:00 p.m.
During the season, Westfield
split the two games winning in
Woodbury in double overtime
while dropping a home game after
leading by 10 points at halftime.
"They have a real good ball
club. They are real balanced and
they have a good coach," said Lady
Hornets Coach Donna Campbell.
"I didn’t think we played real well
up there. We shot as far as
percentge wise, shot less than 30
percent from the field in the double
overtime game."
Back in Perry, the Lady Hornets
didn't fare much better shooting
only 22 percent from the field.
But, to the Lady Wildcats credit,
Flint River shot 68 percent after
trailing by 10 points at intermis
sion.
"I look for a tough game. They
have a good ball club," Campbell
Edwards came in when Sikes
went out and thomas was pleased
with his play.
"I was proud that he was able to
play for us like he did," he added. "I
know he would have liked to have
played more."
Sikes led the team with 22 points
while Green chipped in with 19.
McCuller led the Rams with 24
points although he only hit three
field goals.
"He (Sikes) had 22 points on
eight for 13 shooting. That's a lot
of points," Thomas said. "I would
have liked to see him take 20 to 25
shots. We have to give Sumter
County credit. They did a good job
of keeping the ball out of his
hands. He was still very productive
in light of 13 shots."
Thomas also commended the way
Green played. "He played one of his
end of a career for Coach James
Kinchen.

added. "We have to continue to
play well like we have the last
couple of weeks since we've played
them. If we do that we should be
in good shape."
Campbell feels that playing this
game may be a blessing that she
lost the coin flip that prevented the
Lady Hornets from being the
number one seed.
"If you look at it the other way
where Monroe looks to have the
home court with Mt. DeSales.
They are tough to beat at home,"
she said. "It may be a blessing in
disguise by playing on a neutral
court. Looking at it going in,
Monroe probably will beat Mt.
DeSales. They just beat them this
past Friday night on their home

Perry finished the year 13-12
