Being clever: PHS display new inventions
By CAROL WOOLEY
Staff Writer
First place winners in the Perry
High School "Invent America!"
competition have come up with
some useful and imaginative de
vices. The students must come up
with an invention that solves a need
or problem, state why it is new and
original, how it works, how it is
made and how it could be marketed.
The tenth grade winner, Ricky
Stevens came up with an invention
called "The Stick".
The "Stick" is a lightweight
but strong walking stick containing
a survival kit. It is made of 3/4
inch PVC pipe with two screw on
caps. Inside the stick are a Fishing
line and lure, bullion cubes, sugar
cubes, general first aid items,
sewing kit, waterproof matches, tin
foil, Saran wrap, Tylenol, Pepto
tablets, and water purification
tablets.
Stevens, the inventor,said" I
will market the "Stick" by first of
fering it to Boy Scout Troops and
biking enthusiasts. Then I will
move to ranger stations and rest ar
eas along hiking tra.is.”
Michelle Warner won first place
for the 11th grade with her inven
tion "Easy Haul"
"This invention solves the
problem of having to bend over and
lift leaves into the wheelbarrow."
said Warner "It also increases the
amount of leaves that can be carried
at one time."
The Easy Haul is made by tak
ing a 5 foot by 5 foot plastic tarp
and sewing loops around the edges.
A 25 foot rope is placed through
the loops with 4 feet sticking out
on each end.
It flattens out on the ground so
that you can easily rake leaves on
it. Picking up the two rope handles
to haul the leaves causes the sides
to enclose the leaves. This prevents
them from falling off.
Warner said "I think this inven
tion is new and original because I
have never seen anything similar to
it manufactured. It seemed like a
good, simple idea."
In order to market her invention
she would buy the various products
needed to make and package the

product, then try to distribute the
product wholesale through large
chains such as K-Mart and Wal
mart.
The "Hair Trapper" invented by
Jennifer Yaneris was the 12th grade
winner.
The invention removes the hair
that becomes imbedded in hair
brushes. This allows the user to
clean the brush without soaking it,
and will prolong the life of the
brush.
"A piece of plastic with pre
punched holes (seven rows of three)
is placed over the protruding bris
tles on the brush" explained
Yaneris, describing her invention
"It is then pushed to the bottom of
the brush, and when the brush gets
filled with pulled out hair, the "Hair
Trapper" is pulled off, and out
comes the imbedded hair. (It is
reusable).
The "Hair Trapper will be mar
keted most effectively if it is placed
near the brushes in a store. When
people buy a brush, they could also
pick up a "Hair Trapper" to prolong
the life of their new brush."
The contestants were required to
build a sample of their invention
and to keep a detailed journal of its
development. Judging was difficult
because of the variety and original
ity of the entries.
