‘Defenseless’
By JACKIE K. COOPER

Barbara Hershey turns in a solid
performance in her new movie
"Defenseless" but a murky script
and some unanswered questions
place it in the B category from be
ginning to end. With some tighter
editing, a stronger director and a
more coherent script the movie
could have been one of the year's
best.
In the film Hershey plays T.K.
Katwuller, an attorney with her
lover as her client. Steven Seldes
(J.T. Walsh) is accused of running a
pornography studio, but he claims
he only owned the building which
was rented to the pomographers.
Things are going smoothly with
the case until T.K. discovers
Steven's wife is her college room
mate Ellie (Mary Beth Hurt). With
this knowledge she wants out of his
life and off the case. They have an
argument and she leaves his office
one night ready to put the affair be
hind her.
The problem is that Steven turns
up dead. Now T.K. has another
client and that is Steven’s wife who
is charged with the murder.
Although T.K. does not want to get
any further involved, she knows she
must help her old friend out in order
to clear her name and her
conscience.
You would think a movie that
had a murder, adultery, child .
pornography and a horrific trial
would generate some suspense. But
this one doesn't. You move from
one suspenseful situation to the
next with too much tedium stuck in
between. And you never are really
clear on what has happened at one
point before you move on to an
other set of circumstances that are
also muddled. L
Hershey gives her character a full «
range of emotions but the writers I
have given her some pretty insipid a
lines to spout. Plus she looks pasty V
and greasy throughout the film
Barbara Hershey is usually pre
sented as a very attractive womai
but she doesn't look it in this role.
Mary Beth Hurt is strong as
Ellie, a woman full of hurt and
hate. She keeps you off balance
with her portrayal and could have 1
made it stronger if not saddled with '
a pretentious southern accent.
Sam Shepard is strong and silent
as the police detective assigned to
the case. Wc know he is strong be
cause he fights off one of T.K.’s at
tackers. And we know he is silent
because he has very few lines to
speak in the film.
The movie is rated R for profan
ity, violence and nudity.
"Defenseless" starts out being
guilty of being intriguing. But the
shambles of a script and the long,
long dull passages make it defense
less to the charge of being me
diocre. Barbara Hershey fans may
still find it worth seeing but anyone
wanting a quick movie will opt for
something else.
I scored "Defenseless" an air tight
4 out of 10.

Strorey, who is also an tiagle

achieved Eagle Scout he now has a

back to scouting.
“The most important thing you
can do is influence the life of an
other young boy,” he said.
Eugene Dukes praised the leader

“This is a special night for all of
us and we are fortunate in this
community to have citizens who
take part in scouting,” he said.
