4-H Congress
Perry High School senior Becky Kemp, front row, third left, and two other Houston County
seniors qualified to attend the state 4-H Congress in Atlanta this summer. State
Representatives Sonny Watson and Jay Walker and Senator Sonny Perdue took time to visit
with the students.
4-H readies for county council
Well, it's that time of year again!
The Houston County 4-H held its
first County Council meeting for
1991-92 on Sept. 3, at our usual
meeting place, Flint EMC. The
new senior council officers—Wendy
Shirah, president; Kathryn Harris,
vice president; Amy Ludwig, secre
tary; Marcy Haught, parliamentar
ian; and Amanda Moneyhan, re
porter—led the meeting. There is
also a new junior board —Julian
Harris, president; Sally Smith, vice
president; Mark Slaughter, secre
tary; and Heather Higdon, parlia
mentarian. Also, we have a central
district junior board member —
Julian Harris—in our midst. Lots
of future leaders here!!
Marcy Haught, Becky Kemp, and
Amanda Moneyhan attended State
Congress in Atlanta, representing
Frenchman learns American

by JACK STEED
Special to the HHJ
Have you noticed a French flavor
at Bank South lately? The staff and
many of the bank's customers have
undergone a learning experience this
summer—culturally and education
ally. This unusual opportunity was
made possible by a summer em
ployee who hails from Toulouse,
France.
Canevari Patrick-Gilles, called
Patrick by his Perry associates, is a
student at the Superior School of
Commerce and Trade where he ma
jors in international trade and com
merce. He also attends classes at the
University of Social Sciences of
Toulouse.
Having a great desire to learn
about the banking business, Patrick
has taken advantage of the opportu
nity to work in almost every facet
of banking including the drive-in,
proof, credit loans, bookkeeping
and accounting departments.
Patrick and his co-workers have
become strongly attached to one
another and to hear them talk, one
quickly senses a bonding built on
mutual respect and admiration. The
bank staff, without exception, has
indicated that Patrick is a highly in
telligent individual who almost
immediately overcame a language
barrier.

in 100 percent Leadership and will

Julie Simpson, with whom he
worked most closely, said, "I was
amazed at how quickly he learned to
master even the most closely,
tasks, especially those dealing with
computer operations."
Concerning the bank staff,
Patrick stated that they have been
very helpful and kindhearted to him.
For Patrick, it hasn't been all
work this summer, he also had the
opportunity to engage in many so
cial interactions. Andy Flowers
took charge of this area by taking
him to services and fellowships at
the Perry United Methodist Church.
Patrick said he was most impressed
with the frequency and numbers of
people, particularly young people,
who attend church—not just at the
regular services but during the
rent CPA and DPA participants, as
well as other 4-H accomplishments,
an awards banquet is planned for
Sept. 24 at Flint EMC.
This month we discussed entering
one of the best (but most expen
sive) parts of the fall—fairs. But as
4-Hers, we can win prizes—even
money—by entering an exhibit,
performing a talent and entering and
competing arts and crafts at the
state and national fairs. In the past,
some members of our club have
won up to SIOO this way. Flint
EMC sponsors a contest for energy
exhibits which, by the way, has
been won by Marcy Haught in the
past. Best of luck to all who com
pete this year.
The next County Council meet
ing is 5:30-7 p.m. on Oct. 1, at
Flint EMC.
evenings and at church socials. He
also visited Lake Sinclair, Six
Flags, and Lenox Square in Atlanta.
One of the greatest differences
Patrick noticed between banks in
France and the United States is that
French banks do not have drive-ins
or ATMs. Neither has he ever seen
a break room in a French bank.
American produce, being much less
expensive than French produce,
made a great impression on him.
Concerning living conditions, he
said French houses are much closer
together than in the United States.
He marveled at the amount of space
between the houses here and the
beauty of the environment.
Since the beginning of the school
year, Patrick has expanded his ef
forts in cementing Franco-American
relations by responding to invita
tions to visit French language
classes at several high schools.
These interactions brought the
French language and culture to life
in the classroom providing a learn
ing experience for both Patrick and
the students, he has also found time
to do research on pecans, he be
lieves there is potentially a great
market for pecans in France. This
research will be of great advantage
to him in his international trade and
commerce studies.

Westfield
club to
hold shoot
By TODD YOCUM
Staff Writer
The Westfield Quarterback Club
will hold a dove shoot Saturday to
raise funds to benefit the Westfield
athletic program.
According to Lynda Williams,
organizer of the event, the dove
shoot will be held in South Hous
ton County near Elko.
There will be a $lO tax de
ductible charge for each gun. Con
tributions to the Quarterback Club
will also be welcome.
“We will also lease guns to
groups or individuals,” Williams
said.
“There will be 100 acres of
brown top millet available,” she
said.
She also said that the fields will
be freshly raked.
By raking the fields food that the
doves feed on will be brought to the
top and attract the birds, she said.
The birds generally fly in the
morning but Williams said that it’s
hard to pinpoint when the best time
to hunt will be.
“The best time is in the early
morning and the evening,” she,said.
Williams said that because of
the unusually hot weather that the
Perry area has seen recently the
birds will most likely be out early
in the morning.
She did say that the dove shoot
will go on throughout the day and
hunters are welcome to stay as long
as they like.
She said that she will meet the
hunters at a local church in Elko,
but she would not give the loca
tion.
“If someone wants to participate
they should call me (987-4480),”
she said.
Williams said she will take a
group at 5:30 a.m. out to the fields.
She also said that no drinking
will be allowed.
“Gun safety comes first,” she
said.
Williams said that she expects
this event will be a good fund-raiser
for the club.
“This is the first time I have I
been in charge of a fund-raiser and I
want to make the most money,”
she said.
