idea of waiting around for a possi
ble disaster borders on the unbear
able. Give me an earthquake that
comes without warning instead.
To illustrate what I mean by
fun, surviving a big rowdy
earthquake reminds you to appreci
ate how nice it is when the ground
isn't rolling under your feet and the
walls aren't threatening to come
down on top of you.
Like any brush with a force
much bigger than yourself it forces
a dose of reality. Life is short,
schedules, details and numbers
aren't the most important things
and if you're not careful the ground
can swallow you up.
Next time you see the aftermath
of an earthquake on CNN look at
how many people are laughing with
relief. When you call your friends
and relatives who live out there
don't be surprised by how casual
they are about the whole thing,
that's part of being Californian. In
side, they're thrilled that the roller
coaster stayed on its tracks for at
least one more ride.

burned.

1 had two sons captured.
9 died in the war from its hard
ships or bullets.
Men like Thomas Nelson of
Virginia gave all he had. Nelson
raised S2,(XX),(XX) on his own sig
nature to provision our allies.
After the war, he personally paid
back the loans, wiping out his en
tire estate. He was never reim
bursed by the new struggling gov
ernment.
In the final battle for Yorktown,
Nelson urged General Washington
to fire on his own house, which he
believed to be occupied by the en
emy, General Cornwallis. Nelson
died bankrupt!
Men like John Hart gave all that
was dearest to him. He was driven
from his wife's bedside while she
lay dying. Their 13 children fled in
all directions for their lives.
His fields and gristmill were laid
waste. For more than a year, he
lived in forests and caves and re
turned home after the war to find
his wife dead, his children gone, and
his properties wasted. He died a
few weeks later of exhaustion and a
broken heart.
We owe a debt to our forefathers.
Let us repay it with a renewed
commitment to take the risks
necessary to make this nation the
great nation they envisioned it to
the cocoons to keep the moths in
bc, instead of just settling into
mediocrity.
It reminds me of the story of the
silkworm. The life cycle of a silk
worm from egg to worm to moth
includes the state at which the
worm spins about itself a remark
able cocoon.
This little sack is composed of
400 to 800 yards of silk fiber,
which seals it from the inside as it
waits for metamorphosis.
At the completion of the cycle,
the adult moth will break the co
coon, tearing apart the fine silk
cords that bind it, and fly free.
But the silkworm farmer does not
allow most to become adults. At a
key point in the cycle, he steams
side from maturing. If he didn't do
this, they would go free, leaving a
trail of broken threads which are
useless to the farmer.
There are many people who find
themselves in a situation like these
silkworms, caged in self imposed
cocoons of comfort. There they re
main, worms rather than mature
moths, because they have decided
that the cost of breaking out and
flying free is too high.
God, give us a generation, like
our forefathers, who value liberty
enough to make painful changes,.
At 12:10 p.m. they were
dispatched to the Westwood Trailer
Park after a child had crawled
underneath a resident’s trailer and
held a cigarette lighter to the
trailer's drain pipe. The small fire
burned and split the pipe in half
and burned some insulation. The
fire was out when the fire fighters
and the mattes has been referred to
juvenile authorities.
Fire fighters were called to an
area around Marshall Circle at 1:58
p.m. over a report of a power
transformer that was struck by
lightning. While en-route, the fire
department was re-routed to Third
and Houston Lake Drive in
response to lightning striking a
Nvater heater at the address. Georgia
Power, who had also been notified
about the transformer, went to the
scene and discovered a burning tree
limb. A Georgia Power source said
a fuse was blown but the
transformer suffered no damage.
When firefighters arrived at the
residence they were told lightning
had struck one of the water heater
heating elements. The ensuing heat
burned parts of the insulation and
interior of the water heater. The
lightning also sent smoke into the
bedroom and bathroom but no other
serious damage was reported.

Flower books can be useful
If your grandmother was any
thing like mine, she probably used
to bring flowers in from the garden
to cheer up the kitchen or dining
room table. Spring daffodils,
summer phlox, butterfly weed and
fall asters gave us a feeling of the
seasons, almost like the telling
time from a clock.
Many folks have recently re
quested information on how to
grow old-time cut flowers and
which new varieties to choose.
You need to look no further than
our common garden plant materials
to find those that may be used as
cut flowers such as daffodils and
peach branches.
There arc also several dozen new
or improved annuals and perennials
that arc especially good for use as
cut flowers and are easy to grow so
we all can enjoy them in the garden
and in the home without much ef
fort.
Here is a list of sun-loving an
nuals that do best as fresh cut flow
ers for your garden.
•Snapdragons (Antirrhinum ma
jor), especially the tall Rocket
Scries, for fall and spring flowers.
Snaps can overwinter in Georgia so
plant in fall for light cutting and
cut heavily in spring before pulling
them up for summer annuals.
•Basket Flowers (Centaurea
amcricana)-A very nice cut flower
with full, fluffy (lowers that look
much like glorified bachelor but
tons. Nice color selection and
fairly easy to grow.
•Garden Zinnias (Zinnia cle
gans)-The tall selections of zinnia
arc wonderful cut flowers that arc
often overlooked as being just an
other garden flower. They come in
all colors and make the best, long
lasting cut flowers you can have.
Cutting them often actually makes
for a better kxrking garden plant.
•Cockscomb (Cclosia cristata)-
The 'Chief series is especially bred
for use as a cut flower and is very
bold as well as tall. It's easy to
grow and can be dried.
•Cornflowers (Centaurea
the Agricenlcr were founded by
Green out of a need to have youth
barrel races cast of the Mississippi
River.
Before coming to the Agricenter,
the barrel races‘in Georgia were held
in Unadilla but were moved to the
Agricenter because of the quality of
facilities.
“There will be 160 kids here this
weekend. Two will be coming from
Ontario and one from Quebec,”
Green said.
Other contestants will be coming
from 23 stales including 17 from
Georgia, 34 from Florida, 14 from
Texas, 14 from Ohio, 10 from
North Carolina, 10 from Alabama
and others across the United States.
Green further explained that there
will be a stick horse run for the
younger kids.
“We really want to get die people
from Perry to come out to the
races. There will be no ticket sales
because we want to get the public
to see what we are all about,” he
said.
“The stick horse races will be held
at 5 p.m. Saturday. There will be a
pony barrel race that will run at
noon Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday,”
Green said.
cyanus)-Also called bachelor but
ton, it comes in many colors. In
Georgia this is a late spring cut
flower as summer heat causes it to
decline rapidly.
•Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)-
An old-fashioned garden favorite
that is easy to grow. These tall
flowers range from white and pink
to reds. Loose flowers on thin
stems make beautiful, airy ar
rangements.
•Straw Flowers (Helichrysum
bracteatum)-This is the old-fash
ioned straw flower that is still very
popular in the cut flower garden.
Cut them just before the blooms
fully open.
•Mexican. Sunflower (Tithonia
rotundifolia)-These tall plants arc
not, by themselves a beautiful
plant. But if given full sun in the
back of the garden, they will pro
vide scads of orange flowers that
last. This plant also attracts butter
flies!
•Summer Statice (Staticc sinu
ata, Soiree Serics)-Many annual
statice are stunning. Full sun and
good drainage are required. The can
also be dried without too much
trouble.
•Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena
hybrid 'Strawberry Fields')—This
flower is a delightful strawberry
sized red ball that dries with much
of its bright red color. Truly
sensational with baby’s breath or
statice.
Here's a final word about han
dling cut flowers and making them
last in a vase. Grandma was right
all along. It is best to cut the
flowers in the morning and imme
diately place them in warm sugar
water. The warm temperatures
make the sugar water go up the
plant faster. Floral preservatives
are also good to use. But if you
don't have any, a tablespoon of
table sugar per quart of water will
do.

Most of the county’s 8,000 acres
