What used to be a mosquito in

Drive next to Morningside
Elementary School, has now been
transformed into an attractive and
educational nature area for both the
students and citizens of Houston
County.
In a ribbon cutting ceremony
Tuesday morning, Superintendent
Harold Chapman, members of the
Perry Area Chamber of Commerce,
Georgia Forestry Commission,
Proctor and Gamble and educational
leaders in the county were present
to officially open up the three and a
half acre wooded area dial has been
designated to provide a natural
observation area for school children
and other interested areas.
The project was funded through a
$3,390 grant from the Beautiful
Urban and Community Forest
Initiative Challenge Grant Program
administered by the Georgia
Forestry Commission. Houston
County school system matched the
grant through labor and machine
use while Proctor and Gamble
donated the pine bark that lines the
trail through the area.
The project, actively originated
by Chapman two years ago, was
also an idea of Project Learning
Tree, an environmental education
program sponsored by Proctor and
Gamble. Van Rowell, principal at
Morningside, is a trained instructor
in this program. Among the
facility’s other functions, it will be
used to train other teachers enrolled
in Project Learning Tree.
“We saw an opportunity to work
with the City of Perry, Proctor and
Gamble and the Georgia Forestry
Commission to create an outdoor
educational center that would also
serve as a park area for Perry. This
demonstrates our commitment for
the schools of Houston County to
integrate and cooperate with the
community,” Chapman said.
Peggie Williams, executive di
rector of the Perry Area Chamber of
Commerce, echoed Chapman’s feel
ings and said this will be a real
benefit to the students.
“This is a unique way to teach

children a lot of the things they

said.
In the area there is a centrally lo
cated outdoor amphitheater to facili
tate the “classroom experience”
many Houston County students
will hopefully experience. The
trees in the area will eventually be
identified with signs, but the pro
ject originators are determined not
to disturb the natural environment
