Be aware of new DNR
laws for catching fish
Several new laws were passed
during this past legislative session
regarding personal watercraft,
commonly called jet skis. Under the
new laws, all personal watercraft
operators and passengers are required
to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-
Approved personal flotation device
(PFD), or life jacket. The PFD
must be properly fastened and of the
appropriate size for the wearer.
One of the most notable
portions of the new law prohibits
operating personal watercraft in
excess of 5 mph (of idle speed)
within 100 feet of boats that are
moored or anchored, persons in the
water and any shoreline, bridge
abutments, or docks.
The new regulations also make
it unlawful to operate a personal
water-craft after dark on Georgia
waters. The new law places the
responsibility for safe operation on
both the operator and the owner.
What this means is that if a Law
Enforcement Conservation Ranger
stops a driver for reckless operation,
the owner of the watercraft can also
bo ticketed.
Also, personal watercraft may
no longer be rented to children
under the age of 12, and children
between the ages of 12 and 15 must
be under supervision by an adult
age 18 or older in order to rent a
personal watercraft.

City plans fishing day
at new Rozar lakes
By COSBY WOODRUFF
Sports Editor
The newly renovated fish ponds
at Rozar Park will be unveiled to
the public at a youth fishing rodeo
July 18.
City Manager Marion Hay said
the event would be the result of a
collective effort from several
different city departments.
He said the fishing rodeo would
last from 8 a.m. until noon at the
catfish pond at Rozar Park.
The catfish pond is the pond
nearest the entrance to Rozar Park,
and it has been stocked by the
Department of Natural Resources
with over 11,000 catfish.
He also said the fish had been fed
with feed donated by Flint River
Mills, but added that the feeding had
been discontinued earlier this week.
"We want them to be good and
hungry for Saturday," Hay said.
Hay noted that the city would
provide some cane poles for
fishing, but asked that children
bring their own cane poles if
possible.
He recommended that
participants bring bait such as
shrimp or crickets for use during
the derby.
Following the morning of
fishing, the city will provide a
lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs,
drinks and watermelon.

These laws were designed to
protect both the personal watercraft
operators and others on and around
the water from potential danger.
One of the the most important
things jet ski owners need to keep
in mind is that they arc boat
operators and they must obey the
same rules and regulations as larger
boats.
