Perry is asking residents and
contractors to call 1-800-282-
4711, 72 hours before doing any
kind of digging with machinery and
inform the city of the proposed
work to give city workers an
opportunity to mark underground
lines.
The phone number is for
Utilities Protection Center based in
Tucker. After receiving the call, the
center would then contact the
appropriate city and/or companies
whose lines would be affected by
the proposed digging. In addition
any other excavation or blasting
work requires 72 hour UPC
notification All electric, gas,
telephone and cable television
companies in Georgia are required
to be UPC members.
The service costs Perry 50 cents
per call and the city pays S9O a
quarter to help fund the system.

day outlining the potential hazards
of uninformed digging. The haz
ards included dismantling of
communication lines, cable
television lines and the interruption
of gas, water and sewer flow.
Perry Utilities Superintendent
Harold Deal said using the number
is more efficient than calling City
Hall.
"1 want to urge people to call the
number rather than the engineering
office. The UPC gets the necessary
information and immediately faxes
it to us. If we receive the call first
there is some delay time, calling
the number speeds up the process.
And it makes sense to do it. We
had a worker digging to put up a
stop sign and he ruptured a two
inch gas line. S,o even a small job
can run into problems," Deal said.
The 72 hour UPC notification
became a state law in April, 1990.
If a call is not made and damage
does occur, fines for non-compli
to the Zoning Appeals Board. He
will serve another four year term
after his expired term of June 5,
1992.
Commissioner approved the ac

$20,000. The money was budgeted
for the purchase.

The UPC provides a fax of the
proposed digging area, providing in
formation on nearby lines and other
hazards to cities and utilities. The
caller also receives a special ticket
number certifying that a call was
made. If the work isn't completed in
17 days an additional call must be
made on the fourteenth day.
After they hear from the UPC
the groups with lines in the area
will then come out and mark the
locations with flags or paint. Red
for electricity, yellow for gas, or
ange for telephone, telegraph and
cable television, blue for water and
green for sewers.
"We received 33 calls in June. It
depends on the amount of construc
tion going on and currently we
have quite a bit. We haven't had
many line ruptures in the last two
years, I think you could attribute
that in part to the UPC number,"
Deal said.
