Long John Silvers Manager
Barbara Skinner says she got the
idea when she went to the Perry
AreaChambcr of Commerce to look
up organizations that might need
some fund raising.
“I know all of these little clubs
need money, and since Perry is so
small, it is hard to find it some
times,” Skinner said.
Skinner has strong feelings
about drug and alcohol abuse due to
having seen some of her loved ones
suffer from it. Skinner’s brother
was a fatal victim of drug abuse and
she says that she couldn’t bear to
watch anyone else end like that.
“I have a lot of kids working for
me and they talk about the drug sit
uations in the schools. We really
need to slop it before some of these
situations get too far,” Skinner
said.
Skinner got in touch with Bill
Hathcock, the Perry D.A.R.E. offi
cer, and quickly arranged the car
wash. Skinner said she is really
impressed with Hathcock and the
program that he is a part of.
“He’s outstanding. 1 really ad
mire him for the things he does,”

Max Ebstein is roller blading from Michigan to Florida in an effort to raise money for the American
Cancer Society. Thursday he stopped off in Perry to rest for the night.
Ebstein ‘blades’ for a cause
By KELLIE ROWDEN

Someone pretty special rolled
through town Thursday night. Max
Ebstein of Higgins Lake, Michigan
arrived in the K-Mart shopping cen
ter at 8:55 p.m. on his roller
blades. Ebstein has roller bladcd
from Michigan and is continuing
his journey to Orlando, Florida.
This is a total of 2,000 miles. He
is collecting money for the
American Cancer Society.
Ebstein, who is 20 years old
started on this idea when he was 15
and his grandfather, who he was
very close to, died of bladder cancer.
Ebstein felt he had to do something
and roller blading is how he decided
to do it.
Ebstein’s mother is accompany
ing her son by driving a van behind
him to protect him from the traffic.
He also gets several escorts from
the local police when he goes
through a town.

Authority discusses prospects

The Houston County
Development Authority met at
noon Thursday, July 23, at
Houston Lake Country Club for
their monthly meeting. During the
meeting, the assembled members
discussed possible new corporations
that are looking speculatively at
Houston County for branches or re
locations.
Dick Ulnt also had some good
news concerning the TRW corpora
tion. Due to it’s plans to expand to
a Warner Robins locations, there
arc 31 job positions advertised in a
national business weekly.
Chairman Walter Whiting
brought up the plans for a trip to
Long Island during the month of
December. There arc eight seats
available for members to take the
trip for the reason of approaching
some corporations about re
locating to Houston County.
The trips have been very suc
cessful in the past and seemed to be
worth it," Ulm said.
Ulm also gave the treasurer’s
report and announced the authority’s
assets now total $362,112.67.
this trip, which started May 16.
The first is to raise $1 million for
the American Cancer Society and
the other is to finish by August 5.
He has approximately 360 miles
more to go.
Ebstein’s passion for his cause
has gotten him through several in
juries including a pulled back mus
cle and a pulled Achilles tendon. It
has also seen him through the heat
of Tennessee and the recent rain in
Georgia. But according to Ebstein,
it is definitely worth it.
“You can’t just tell somebody
something, you have to show
them,” Ebstein said.
Ebstein will roller blade five or
six days a week taking only a day
or two off at a time.
Any proceeds Ebstein receives
goes directly to the American
Cancer Society chapter of the state
he is travelling through.
Sponsors for Ebstein’s big ad
venture and cause are K-Mart,
This increase is due to the
$109,000 check presented by
Sherrill Stafford during last months
meeting.
Larry Walker, majority leader of
the State House of Representatives,
told the members about some
groups from the city of Macon that
arc looking into putting a music
hall of fame and a sports hall of
fame in- Macon. The projects are
estimated to cost $3 million each
and Walker said the details were

To The Friends and Supporters of Arthur Head:
My family and I extend to you our thanks for
affording me the opportunity to stand up and speak out
for what I think is right. I especially want to extend my
thanks to Mr. Jay Walker for allowing our race for
County Commission Post 4 to be run cleanly and fairly.
I congratulate him on his victory.
I will continue to stay involved in community
affairs so that I can help insure the continuation of the
excellent quality of life that we who live in Houston
County are so fortunate to enjoy. As a self-employed
contractor who campaigned as an ordinary citizen with
a common sense approach, I again say Thank You to
my friends and supporters for your time, your energy
and your financial contributions.

Ebstein stayed at the Holiday Inn
on Sam Nunn Boulevard in Perry
Thursday night and K-Mart donated
SSO for gas money for the van, two
jars of juice, a heating pad for his
back and maps of Georgia and
Florida.
“He seems to be a motivated
young man. He needs our support
and the American Cancer Society
needs our support,” Harvey Boyd,
manager of Perry’s K-Mart said.
Ebstein is accepting none of the
money for himself. Boyd com
mented on how wonderful and
amazing such a stance is.
“He only accepting money to
keep the journey going. The SSO I
gave him was only to keep his van
going,” Boyd said.
Donations may be made through
any K-Mart or may be sent directly

“I feel that these two facilities
would enhance the Robins Air

to begin to attract more tourists to
the area,” Walker said.
Whiting ended the meeting with
the gesture of asking that the City
of Perry and the City of Warner
Robins to attempt to maintain
stronger communication lines
during the process of the new
corporations entering the area.
