Hospital offers CPR training
By BRIAN LAWSON
Staff Writer
As part of a continuing program,
Perry Hospital will be offering
CPR classes August 12-13 to the
public.
CPR stands for Cardiopul
monary Resuscitation, which in
volves restoring breathing clearing
airways and compression to restore
a lost heartbeat. A working defini
tion of CPR is, "away of main
taining life once the heart slops
beating.
The program is taught by hospi
tal nurses Denise Atkinson and Sue
Braley. Braley has been a CPR
instructor for 16 years and she
knows the classes make a differ
ence.
"In 1990 1 taught a church group
in Fort Valley CPR. Two weeks
later two 17 year old boys were
swimming and they discovered a lit
tle girl who was floating unrespon
sive in the pool. They pulled her
out of the water and commenced
CPR work on her until the life
guard and other help arrived. The
little girl survived. 1 think that
says it all about the value of having
CPR training," Braley said.
Eight hours of training is re
quired in order to receive CPR certi
fication. The classes at Perry Hos
pital are conducted over two four
hour days.
Perry Hospital issued a press re
lease describing some of the areas
covered in the classes including,
"What to do in the event of a
cardiac arrest and how to recognize
signs and symptoms of an attack."
In addition, CPR instruction to be
used for adults, infants and young
children and training for dealing
with witnessed and unwitnessed
choking will also be taught.
"I got involved in CPR in 1975
when it was still new. Since then
I've taught lay people, medical per
sonnel, church groups, older vet
erans groups who were concerned
about their spouses, day care work
ers for training on children and par
enthood classes for treating new
borns," Braley said.
Braley has been able to use her
knowledge to save her own child

from cholking and has used CPR
numerous times in her work as a
nurse.
"A CPR certified person is the
best help available for a person
with no pulse," Braley said.
Perry Hospital estimates that
CPR may save 100,000 to 200,000
lives in the United Slates each year.
Marti Marchant, Perry Hospital
public relations director, summed
up the reason for the classes.
"We can decrease the number of
deaths due to heart attacks by in
creasing the number of people who
arc trained in CPR," she said.
