Wagon set
to visit fair
Georgia's Building Authority will
be responsible for bringing the
state’s replica of the original
Conestoga Wagon to Perry for the
Georgia National Fair next month.
This wagon has an interesting
history beginning with the
country's Bicentennial celebration
in 1976.
To celebrate the Bicentennial of
America, a wagon train left Stone
Mountain April 11, 1976, heading
for Valley Forge, Penn. The
Pennsylvania's Bicentennial
Committee furnished each state a
wagon to lead their part of the
wagon train. Each of the original
13 states received a reproduction of
a Conestoga Wagon. Georgia’s
Conestoga Wagon led the wagon
train from Stone Mountain and ren
dezvoused with several other wagon
trains and arrived at Valley Forge
July 4, 1976.
The Conestoga Wagon was subse
quently brought back to Georgia
and forgotten until it was revived
and refinished to take part in the
"Make Georgia A Shining
Example" campaign to restore the
gold on the Georgia Capitol Dome.
As part of the campaign, the
Conestoga Wagon led a wagon train
from Jckyll Island May 12, 1979
and travelled 600 miles through
Georgia's former capital cities be
fore arriving in Dahlonega June 16,
1979. On Nov. 23, 1979 with the
Conestoga Wagon again in the lead,
a wagon train consisting of 75
wagons and 200 riders left
Dahlonega for Atlanta carrying 43
ounces of gold to be put on the
Capitol Dome.
Since that time the "Georgia"
wagon has participated in many lo
cal festivals throughout the State of
Georgia.
