Perry rallies to beat Jones 31- 21
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
It's one of the oldest football
cliches but Perry beat Jones County
31-21 Friday night because they
committed fewer turnovers and they
capitalized on their opponents
mistakes.
Reserve linebacker Antwann Fann
playing in place of the injured Ter
rence Walker made three key plays
to help turn the game around.
The Panthers were down 21-12
midway through the third quarter
and had just missed a field goal,
when Fann helped swing the mo
mentum Perry's way.
On the first play after the missed
field goal, Jones County fullback
Terrence Graham fumbled on the
Greyhound 20 yard line and Fann
recovered the ball.
On first down Panther halfback
Tcruya Williams dashed 13 yards to
the Greyhound 7. On the next play
play quarterback Shawn Bass carried
the ball around the right corner into
the end zone.
After a missed extra point the
Panthers trailed 21-18.
The next big play came with 45
seconds left in the third quarter.
Jones County Quarterback Michael
Whiddon threw the ball high and
Perry safety Tarcnce Hill had the
ball ricochet off his shoulder pads
and then drop into his arms as he

The expert
is down but
not out
If memory serves I made some
predictions on some games last
week that weren't exactly accurate.
Among the losers were the
Raiders by 21, the Falcons by 38,
the Washington Huskies (two failed
predictions) by 13, Arkansas in a
close one, Boston College by a ton.
Well, in a bold house cleaning
move I'm wiping out my cast of
experts and starting over.
Cosby was pretty accurate and I'm
not so far, but I have an
explanation.
I figured Washington would lose
to Arizona, but how interesting or
difficult is it to pick Miami for the
national championship? The
Raiders were doomed but I wanted
them to win because they're my
team (shrewd pick huh?), Boston
College because I hate Notre Dame
and Arkansas because the state's on
a roll.
So here are my picks for this
week, I won't use those other guys,
they're useless (unless I do lousy
again, then I'll probably bring them
back).
Georgia vs Auburn. Auburn is
circling the wagons and knows their
beloved coach is facing his final
days. Dogs coming off a loss and
are still thinking New Year’s Bowl.
For more reasons than we have
space for, I'm picking Georgia.
Notre Dame vs Penn State. Irish
coming off their best game of the
season, while Penn State is
suddenly going backwards. These
games are usually fourth quarter,
kicker and turnover affairs so I'm
going with Notre Dame despite the
fact that Lou Holtz (who I like as
much as Pat Dye) is their coach.
Miami vs Temple. Just to make
sure I get a winner I'm going
against the grain and picking the
'Canes. I know Temple is favored
but I'm a gambler.
Ft. Valley vs Albany State. The
Wildcats are rolling toward the top
ind my boy Eric says this is a sure
winner. Always listen to your
friends.
USC vs Arizona. Larry Smith
used to coach Arizona and he'd like
nothing better than to derail the
'Cats after their huge win against
Arizona. Defense usually prevails
and USC is weak at QB. I"m
going with Arizona.
Just for the record, I've always
lost money betting football. I tend
to bet my heart but that gets you
bupkiss so I'm starting to use my
brain. Beware dangerous
precedents.
fell flat on his back on the Perry
46 yard line.
The third quarter ended with the
Panthers on the Jones 35 following
a late hit on Bass.
Following an illegal procedure
call, Bass threw a screen pass to
Stacy Francis who carried it down
to the Jones 23.
Two short gains and another pro
cedure call had the Panthers facing
third and 12 on the 25 yard line
when Francis slid through the de
fense for 14 yards and a first down.
Bass ran for eight more down to the
Jones three yard line. Two sneaks
failed, and the Panthers had another
procedure call against them.
With 8:08 left in the game on
second and goal from the six,
Williams found a crease on the left
side and scored the go-ahead touch
down. The Panthers converted their
first extra point of the night and
they led 25-21.
Jones County managed two first
downs, but a sack by Fann forced
them to punt.
Perry then went three downs and
out and the punt by George Francis
took a Jones County bounce and
put the ball on the Perry 41.
On first down Whiddon dropped
back and was intercepted by Fann
who ran the interception 63 yards to
the Jones four.
Westfield's Danny Perfect scrambles for the Hornets first touchdown Friday
night. The Hornets lost 40-24 to FPD to end their season.
FPD ends WHS season 40-
24 in Ist round of playoffs

It's probably safe to say that only
the most diehard Westfield Hornet
fans truly believed that their team
could defeat the top-ranked First
Presbyterian Vikings twice in one
season. However, although FPD
won 40-24, the game was closer
than that, and what was predicted to
be a blow-out turned out to no a
hard fought game Friday night in
Macon.
The Hornets got off to a fast start
when they marched 70 yards on
their opening drive to score the
game's first touchdown on a seven
yard scramble by quarterback Danny
Perfect at 9:11 of the first quarter.
Lon Tallon's extra-point attempt
was no good and the score remained
6- Westfield.
True to the test however, on their
first possession FPD put together
their own 70-yard, 15-play scoring
drive culminating in a one-yard
plunge by Chris Wilson with 2:43
left in the opening period to make
the score 6-6 after they too failed to
covert the PAT.
On the drive, Wilson, who is a
sure all-state selection at running
back, carried the ball 11 times for
54 yards and the touchdown. On
the night, he ended up with 148
yards on 26 carries and 4 touch
downs. He alone was responsible
for 233 all-purpose yards.
After the two teams went three
plays and out on their next posses
sions, Westfield made their first
mistake when John Shipley lost the
handle and fumbled on the Hornet's
7- after they were pinned
deep by a good FPD punt.

On third and goal from the eight
Bass threw to Boris King in the
back of the end zone for the final
score.
The game began well for Perry
when Williams took the opening
kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
But Jones County had a big night
from Williams who scored all three
of their touchdowns and finished
with 185 yards on 21 carries.
With Perry leading 6-0, at the end
of the first quarter Francis muffed a
punt and Jones County covered it
on the Perry 37.
On the first play of the second
quarter Williams broke three tackles
and ran 37 yards for the touchdown.
Jones converted the extra point
and led 7-6.
With 5:00 left in the half, Jones
County shanked a punt and die Pan
thers took over on the Greyhound
28. Bass started outside, then
tucked behind the left guard and
raced 28 yards for the touchdown.
The second conversion attempt
failed and the Panthers led 12-7.
Jones County again came back
with Williams doing most of the
damage. He carried for 21 yards on
four carries to the Perry 46. On
second down Williams bounced off
a tackle and ran 42 yards for another
touchdown.
The kick missed and Perry trailed
FPD capitalized on the miscuc
when quarterback Phillip Anderson
scored on third-and-goal from the
onc-yard-linc with 8:53 left in the
first half to make the score 12-6
following another unsuccessful
point-after attempt.
The Hornets came right back on
the ensuing kickoff when Brad
Dehem dodged and dipped for 60
yards returning the ball to FPD's
30-yard-line. However, the drive
stalled after four plays and what ap
peared to be a good opportunity
went by the way as the Hornets
turned the ball over on downs.
It was here that the Hornet defense
came up with a big play when
Shane Hester intercepted Anderson
and returned the ball to the FPD
four-yard-linc from where the
Hornets scored one play later on a
Perfect to Talton pass play which
Talton snagged after the ball de
flected off another player in the
back of the end zone. Again,
Talton was not successful in his
point-after attempt and the score
was tied at 12-12 with 5:03 left in
the half.
On the ensuing kickoff, FPD's
Wilson returned the ball to mid
field, giving the Vikings good field
position. They scored five plays
later with 3:13 left in the half on
another one-yard quarterback sneak
by Anderson. Stuart Cook kicked
the game's first extra-point to make
the score 19-12 FPD.
Westfield would not quit though,
and put together a lightning fast
scoring drive of their own ending
on an 11-yard touchdown pass by
Perfect to Hester with 1:17 to play
in the half making the score 19-18
Antwann Fann (90), starts downtield with his fourth quarter interception.

13-12.
The final Jones score came on the
first possession of the second half.
After Williams returned the kick
off 47 yards to the Perry 38 they
went 38 yards in eight plays, with
FPD after an unsuccessful two
point conversion attempt.
Just when it looked like the teams
would retire to the locker room
however, Wilson struck again when
he raced 85 yards on the ensuing
kickoff. The play ended the first
half scoring at 25-18 FPD after yet
another failed PAT, and both teams
received a standing ovation from the
fans.
Following the intermission,
Westfield finally began to show
signs of fatigue allowing the
Vikings to score on their second
possession when Wilson ran in
from three yards out after Westfield
had given up their second fumble of
the night on their own 20-yard-line.
This time, FPD executed a two
point conversion to make the score
33-18 FPD with 8:36 left in the
third quarter.
FPD scored again two possessions
later on yet another Wilson run
from two yards out after they had
received good field position when
Westfield was forced to punt from
deep in their own territory. Cook's
PAT made the score 40-18 and all
but put an end to the Hornet's sea
son.
Westfield was able to put the ball
in the end zone one last time with
8:39 left in the game when Perfect
hit Dehem for a 32-yard scoring
strike making the score 40-24, but
it was too little, too late as time
ran out on the Hornets 1992 sea
