Lady Panthers face a new region
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
The Perry Lady Panthers basket
ball team has moved up a class and
will face a competitive region in
the 1992-93 season.
The good news for the Lady Pan
thers is the return of four starters
from last year's 12-11 squad.
Unfortunately, the starter who
will have to be replaced was last
year's leading scorer and rebounder,
Deidre Williams. Williams is now
playing for Valdosta State College.
Coach Tim Simmons said he was
pleased with the performance of last
year's squad but is looking for im
proved performances from each of
his returning starters.
"Deidre was our key player last
year and we'll miss her. But if each
of the starters improves somewhat
over last year and the new fifth
starter helps out, we should be able
to play at the same level we did last
year," he said.
The four returning starters are
senior point guard Benita Billings
(25), senior forward Chasity
Thornton (3), junior center Angela
Leggett (10) and sophomore guard
Amber Fendley (14).
"Angela started at power forward
for us last year but we're asking her
to move to center. She's a good re
bounder and she's done a good job
taking the ball to the basket in
practice. It's been a pleasant
surprise the way she has developed
and improved since last year. We're
expecting good things from her this
season," Simmons said.
Billings will provide floor leader
ship and is the team’s best ball han
dler. Last season she was the
team's second leading rebounder.
Thornton is one of the team's best
outside shooters and Simmons is
hoping she'll improve on a solid
junior season. The offense will
look to Thornton to help offset the
loss of scoring from Williams.
According to Simmons, Fendley
will help with the outside shooting
and is an unselfish player.
The power forward position is
likely to be shared between senior
Takesia Rogers (31) and freshman
Yatosha Davis (33).
"We'll play each of them depend
ing on the situation. If it's a tight
game where there is a lot of press
ing we'll play Yatosha. In a slower
half court game we'll use Takesia.
We want to use the abilities of both
of them," Simmons said.
Entering a new region has Sim
mons working on a man-to-man
defense, something he has not spent
much time on in the past.
"From what I've been told this is
a man-to-man region. The teams
are more aggressive and we need to

Washington at New Orleans.
This is one of those games that an
nouncers love. They'll talk about
how both teams have their backs to
the wall, there are playoff implica
tions and both teams had painful
losses last week. The game should
entertain and New Orleans can be
scary at home on Monday night. I
like the Saints but Joe Gibbs has
an extra day to prepare and his sea
son is hinging on this game. Look
for a classic.
Call me crazy but I think this is
my week. If not, there's always a
relative to blame.

be prepared to play that style. The
team realized after last season we
needed to improve our conditioning
and get stronger. Working on the
man-to-man has helped us get in
better shape and we arc spending
two days a week in the weight
room. Perry has traditionally been
a zone team and it's been
successful, but we need to be ready
to play a different style if we're
forced to," he said.
The Lady Panthers have a very
young bench this season and Sim
mons is concerned about his depth.

sophomores and freshman.
"We'll probably play eight or nine
people once we get into the season.
Early on, we'll experiment and I'll
probably play 10 or 11 players," he
said.
Simmons plans to field a ninth
grade and a B team in addition to
the varsity.

"If wc can give the freshmen and
the sophomores a chance to play on
a regular basis it will help develop
their games and hopclully keep
them in the program for four
years," Simmons said.
"I don't think we’re going to have
one person stand out like we did
last year. To play well, wc will
have to play as a team and lake
what the opposition gives us. Wc
may have somebody score 25
points one night and then the next
game it will be somebody else.
The key to us winning is getting
improvement from each of our
starters. We had trouble with
aggressive teams last year and I
expect the new region to be filled
with aggressive teams. But I think
wc can play with the teams in the
region. We've got a tougher
schedule than last year but I'm
looking forward to it," Simmons
said.

long length of rope which was tied
around the horse and pack in a
configuration called a diamond
hitch. We finally mastered this
hitch after many lost loads and
became fairly proficient at packing
the burros.
My second exposure to packing
was in the wild of British
Columbus on a two week pack trip.
When we offered to help the guides
pack the large mountain pack
horses, they quickly told us to keep
our hands off and let them do the
work. They did not want packs and
equipment scattered over miles of
wilderness trails. Even with their
expert packing, the rough, green
broke horses would buck and throw
equipment in every direction.
Two brothers from Perry also got
a lesson in packing last weekend.
Richard and Larry Horsting, who
arc noted for their hunting and
riding ability decided to pack into a
large wild area on the Flint River
and deer hunt.
Larry has owned a small mule
named Amos for many years and
Amos was picked to be their pack
animal. Larry assured Richard that
he knew how to pack a mule.
Larry killed a deer and he and
Richard packed their equipment,
deer stands and the dead deer on
Amos's back and started out of die
woods. The deer started to slip and
slipped under Amos’s stomach. A
mule as everyone who has ever
fooled with them knows is a
creature with a mind of his own.
When something docs not suit
them they will lie down until the
situation is reminded.
Amos, first sat down in the
middle of the trail, then laid down
on his side. He would not budge
until he was unpacked and them
repacked to his satisfaction.
I often think that this is one of
the reasons older people, who grew
up on farms in the era of mules and
fooled with them on a daily basis,
are able to get along and adapt
better in life than we modern
people. Anyone who has been
around mules very long quickly
learns about human nature, because
there are many similarities between
mules and many people I know,
including myself.
