Panthers season ends,
coach looks to next year.
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
Perry's first football season in a
new region ended with a 41-7 first
round playoff loss to Appling
County Friday night.
The Panthers finished the year 4-
7. Their first year record in region
2AAA was 3-3.
Coach John Stephens points to
the Panthers’ Oct. 9 loss to Ware
County as the critical game of the
Perry season.
"That was a crucial game for us.
We fumbled on their five, and went
on downs inside their 10. In the
first half we outgained them 169-
63, and only had seven points to
show lor it. You can 'lf yourself
into a champion or a nothing but if
we had won that game it would
have given us momentum for the
rest of*thc season. It could have re
sulted in a three way tie in the re
gion and a home game in the play
offs," Stephens said.
The Panthers offensive line aver
aged around 185 pounds and the de
fensive line averaged 178 pounds.
The si/e disparity hurt the Panthers
against physical teams like Peach
County, Fitzgerald, Appling
County and Cook County.
We had a quick defense and that
quickness compensated somewhat
for the lack of size but when your
defense gels pounded on play after
play it cats away at the quickness.
There were times our defense was
on the field for long stretches and
our lack of size became a critical
factor. Both of our lines played
with a lot of heart, but heart can
only take you so far. If you look at
it from that side, it's kind of a Cin
derella story that we even made the
playoffs. But if you look at it from
another side, we should have been
seven and three," he said.
Stephens said the Panthers should
have beaten Ware County and had a
good chance to beat both Houston
and Cook Counties.

The defensive line and linebackers
matured the most and provided the
biggest surprise for Perry's coach.
"We had four kids, Jarvis
Stripling, Fred Ragin, Antwann
Fann and Tim Allen, who played
key backup roles as freshmen and
sophomores. The experience and
maturity they gained this year will
help us going into next year," he
said.
On offense, the Panthers lose
quarterback Shawn Bass to gradua
tion. Sophomore Jason Brett was
Bass' back-up this year and is ex
pected to compete for the spot next
season. Freshman running back
Kiwaukee Thomas and sophomore
Dexter Kendrick were cited by
Stephens as players he expects to
make an impact in 1993.
"Brett was hurt most of the year.
We wanted to give him more play
ing time to get a good look at him
but he was injured. I've been here
three years and I’ve had a new quar
terback each year. Kiwaukee will
get action next year. He's a dedi
cated kid and he's going to get big
ger. Dexter Kendrick gained experi
ence and I expect him to be a force
for us next year," he said.
The injury to Arthur Billings gave
Boris King a chance to play tight
end where he played well according
to Stephens.
Key mistakes plagued the Pan
thers most of the year. Against
Appling County they fumbled
twice within the Appling 25 and
twice near mid-field. The fumbles
resulted in three Appling touch
downs.
"With only eight seniors you
don't have a great deal of leadership
and resources to draw from. We'll
have double that number next year.
We need a little more stability and
having more seniors will help with
that. I feel we'll be better, we've
more kids back with more experi
ence, you can't help but feel opti
mistic," Stephens concluded.
