Kiwanians are urged to help
support Safehouse shelter

Salvation Army Safehouse
Director Leila Anderson spoke to
local Kiwanians Tuesday about the
Warner Robins shelter that houses
abused women and children for the
Middle Georgia area.
Anderson told Kiwanians the
shelter provides emergency shelter
and everything the victims need in
cluding food, clothing and direction
for their problems. "We hold their
hands a lot," Anderson said.
"They come to me as a last re
sort," she said. "It's something they
don't choose to happen.
Anderson said the Safehouse is
a place for starting over and for
gaining self respect.
"The biggest part of my job is

increased 7.1 percent."

visitors from last year's 437.

•St. Christophers Episcopal
Church will sell chicken barbecue
plates from 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Saturday. The cost is $4 per plate.
•The “Christmas in Oldc Perry”
parade will begin on Gen. Courtney
Hodges Blvd. and travel to Main
Street beginning at 2 p.m.
Saturday.
•Pictures can be made with Santa
at 933 Carroll Street from 3-5 p.m.
Saturday and 2-4 p.m. Sunday.
•A Christmas dinner theatre per
formed by the Perry United
Methodist youth choir and drama
group will begin at 7 p.m.
•Masscc Lane Gardens will have
Christmas open house from 1-5
p.m. Sunday.

Donna Ferris, an abuse victim
who lived at Safehouse, also spoke
to the Kiwanians.
She said, "If there wasn't a
Safehouse, I would be in an abusive
situation right now."
Ferris gave Safehouse and
Anderson credit for being there for
her during her pain.
Another person who gave
Anderson praise for her hard work
and dedication was Kiwanian Judge
George Nunn. Nunn said he saw
Anderson in court regularly trying
to help victims. He said it's real
when he secs the black and blue
faces.
Anderson asked for support
In other business:
•Riddles discussed the Atlanta
Committee For the Olympic
Games' terms for hotels and motels
picked to be a member of the
"Host Hotel Network" during 1996.
Hotels selected arc: Comfort Inn,
Days Inn, EconoLodgc, Friendship
Inn, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn,
New Perry Hotel, Quality Inn,
Scottish Inn, Shoncy’s Inn and
Travclodgc. The contract is pending
the hotels' acceptance.
•Finance and promotion reports
were presented and approved.
• Member Walter Lewis
presented Derry Watson with a
plaque commending him for his
service as treasurer from 1989-92.
Ray Mobley offered welcoming
comments before Crowe and
Creighton unveiled the new Weyer
haeuser sign which replaced the
Procter and Gamble sign at the en
trance.
The employees received their
new hard hats and identification
badges alter the transition ceremony
and luncheon.
Weyerhaeuser now has nine loca
tions in Georgia and employs over
1,450 people . The company is the
world’s largest pulp producer. Pulp
is a processed product used to make
a wide variety of paper, packaging
and consumer products.
•The Christmas Cloggers will
perform Sunday on Carroll Street
between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
•Perry Presbyterian will perform
“King of Love” at 5 p.m. on Sun
day.
•A community candlelight ser
vice will begin at 7 p.m. on the
courthouse lawn Sunday.
•The fourth annual festival of
trees will be held at Massee Lane
Gardens from 12-5 p.m. Sunday.
The cost is $2.
•Perry United Methodist Church
will have a women’s Christmas tea
in the church sanctuary at 3:45
p.m. on Sunday.

Kiwanian Barbara Jones an
nounced the club will be accepting
donations for Safchousc. She said
the organization needs sheets, pil
lows, blankets, mattresses and
many other items. Donations can
be brought to Jones Jewelers on
Carroll Street. They are also accept
ing cash donations.
The Kiwanians also recognized
Matt Hutchens, who is this year's
Hugh O'Brien Leadership Award
recipient at Perry High School.
Hutchens thanked the Kiwanians for
their recognition.

•The pancake breakfast will be

charge of the program next week.
•Richard Ray will speak Dec.
15 at spouse night.
•Rev. Jim Shipley will be in
charge of the Prayer Breakfast
planned for Dec. 22 at the New
Perry Hotel.
