April Horsting puts up a shot against Stratford Friday night.
Horsting was the Westfield's leading scorer in the 37-27 loss.
Westfield offense
sputters in defeat
By J.J. COOPER

The heart of the Westfield Lady
Hornet's offense rest in their inside
players. As a result, normally if
Westfield is going to win, they will
win with production Irom inside the
paint.
Senior forward April Horsting is
the linchpin of the offense, but cen
ter Kimberly Marshall can be
counted on to score, and guard
Laura Langston also gels a large
percentage of her points in the
paint.
But on Friday, the Lady Hornets
found out what happens when their
outside shooting heads south —their
inside game suffers as well, as the
Lady Hornets offense struggled all
night in a 37-27 loss to the
Stratford Lady Eagles.
Last season, Westfield used the
long range shooting ability of Erica
Graham to open up the middle for
Christi and April Horsting. On
Friday, it was apparent that the
Lady Hornets arc still looking for a
successor to Graham in the shooter
role.
The Hornets had an abysmal
shooting night, as they made no
uitside shots in the first half. In the
second half they were held to 2-13
shooting from the outside.
As a result, Stratford packed the
lane with defenders, stifling
Westfield's remaining offense.
"We had trouble getting in sync,"
head coach Donna Campbell said.
"Offensively all night long we
struggled. We have to have better

point production from our guards.

On the other hand, while
Stratford started slowly, they were
able to rely on the long-range
shooting of Jessica Ogburn, with
three three-pointers, and the all
around shooting of Bonnie
Haygood, who supplied 14 points.
But luckily for the Hornets, the
rest of the Eagles had a sub-par
shooting night. In fact, Westfield
led 6-0 with less than a minute to
go in the first quarter.
But it was Westfield's turn to get
even colder on offense in the second
half, as the Hornets did not manage
to sink a field goal in the second
quarter. Stratford rallied to take a
14-10 lead.
At the half, Westfield was shoot
ing only 17% from the field.
In the third quarter, the Hornets
and Eagles traded baskets at a
glacial pace. Westfield was able to
rally to within two points twice,
but the Eagles reopened the lead to
five, 22-17, heading into the final
quarter.
Both offense's picked up the pace
in the fourth period, but Stratford’s
offense was a step ahead as the
opened the lead to 10 points for a
37-27 win.
The Lady Hornets are now 2-2.
