Seminole -Lake is still six inches above normal. Heavy rains
Thursday have produced some flooding. Fishing activity is slow,
but anglers have had good success with Crappie using live
minnows. A Bass fisherman reported catching a six pound and a
four pound Bass using spinner bait in the river channel.
- Reported by Wingate’s Lunker Lodge
Blackshear- Lake is down slightly and stained. Anglers
reported very good results catching White Perch both trolling
and pitching around in deep water. Holiday season has slowed
fishing activity. Area received some rain and strong afternoon
winds Thursday.
- Reported by Marian Stewart, Camper’s Haven
Sinclair- Lake is at normal level and muddy. Bass was biting
and jigging spoons. Crappie has been fair to good at night using
live minnows and trolling with jigs at night. Catfish are plentiful
and are biting live worms and cut bait. Weather has been cold and
windy.
- Reported by Glenn Colwell, Little River Park
Jackson - Lake is normal and stained but high, muddy water is
expected after heavy rains north of Atlanta. A Bass tournament
held last weekend yielded several large fish and the bigger Bass
are starting to bite a mixture including rattletraps, shadraps and
worms. Crappie has been fair using jigs on trolling lines.
- Reported by Van Kersey, Kersey's Marina
West Point - Lake is down two and a half feet and is very
muddy Heavy rains this week have kept anglers away and very
little fishing it taking place.
- Reported by John Jones, Highland Marina
Eufaula - Lake is full and stained. Winds, cold weather and rain
have slowed fishing activity. Bass are biting worms, crankbait and
spinner bait in deeper water 10-15 feet Fishing for Crappie has
slowed, but a few are still being caught around bridges and main
river ledges using minnows. Jig and spoons and pogo perch
have proven effective for Hybrids near ledges and creek drop
offs at 18-20 feet.
- Reported by Charles Ingram, Tom Mann Outdoors
Lake Martin - Lake is clear and full. Spotted Bass still biting in
large numbers on Texas rigged worms near the coves and rocky
points. Lake is two hours Northwest of Eufaula.
- Reported by Larry Collins, Piney Woods Restaurant
Shell Point, Fla. - Redfish and Speckled Trout are still biting
well on live shrimp. Mangrove Snapper have been biting live
shrimp and jigs. Grouper has been excellent lately in deeper
water biting squid and cigar minnows. Sheepshead has been fair
using fiddler crabs and oysters. Weather has stayed warm this
week and fishing should be good rest of the year.
• Reported by George Taft, Shell Point Marina
Suwannee, Fla. - Speckled Trout are biting shrimp, mirror
lures and grubs. Several boats are still catching the limit. Redfish
has been plentiful using live shrimp. Sheepshead has been

Christmas gift giving ideas for
your favorite hunter, sportsman
What is Santa Claus bringing
your favorite sportsmen? Well, if
you arc looking for some gift
giving ideas, let me share some of
my favorites.
Knives - Outdoorsmcn never have
enough knives, and a small pocket
knife is always a plcaser. For the
big game hunter, I really like the
new Cicrbor Gator that comes with
a rubber folding handle and nylon
sheath. It's lightweight and
extremely durable. Wal-Marl's got
them for about S3O. For the hunter
who prefers a fixed blade, try Buck's
Model 105 "personal model" with a
5-inch blade for about the same
price.
Boots - Comfortable boots arc
very important to an outdoorsman,
and it's tough to beat Rocky Boot
Company's 11-inch guide boots
that have rubber bottoms combined
with leather and nylon uppers. They
have Gor-Tcx fabric in the liner, so
they arc waterproof and well
insulated. Bass Pro Shops (1-800-
221-1116) sells this boot for S9O,
and the boots come with extra foot
pads that help insulate the bottom
of your feet. They have a seven-year
warranty and arc the most
comfortable and warm boots you
can buy for the money. Bass Pro
Shops has good prices and excellent
service. Request one of their big
catalogs.
Camouflage - Every hunter needs
extra camos, and my personal
favorite is the Mossy Oak Tree
Stand pattern available in many
catalogs and local stores. My
favorite arc the six-pocket pants (I
never have enough pockets), the
long-sleeve T-shirts and
bowhuntcr's jacket. The Mossy Oak
brand is very durable and
comfortable, and it's produced by
Gaas Outdoors in West Point,
Miss. (601-494-8859).
Their coveralls arc the answer to
cold deer hunts or cold-weather
fishing, along with a full face-knit
mask. These two items are worth
their weight in gold w'hcn the
Saltwater anglers alter
tactics in cold weather
To hard core saltwater anglers,
cold w'cathcr simply isn’t an obsta
cle. To catch snook, trout, redfish,
cobia, tarpon and other species dur
ing the winter, bundle up and make
a few changes in fishing style
Many fish behave differently in
winter, so anglers need to adjust
their fishing techniques.
"Blucfish, redfish, trout and many
other species become sluggish
when the water gets cold," said
Toyo Shimano, an avid angler and
product manager for Shimano
American Corp., a leading manufac
turer of rods and reels. "Since they
feed more slowly, anglers need to
work lures more slowly. Jigs,
which arc worked relatively slow,
may produce better results than fast
moving spoons."

NRA advocates gun safety for children
It is amazing to see some of the
material and ideas that arc being
taught in the public and private
schools throughout the country. It
is no wonder that we are raising
young people with no sense of
values or morals.
I was visiting in a home in a
South Georgia town last Sunday.
Our conversation turned to firearms
and we opened the gun cabinet to
look at some of the homeowners
guns.
His twenty-four year old
daughter, who teaches in the lower
grades of a local school,
immediately got up and left the
room. She came back into the room
after we had put the guns back into
the cabinet and stated that it was
safe for her to come back in.
I asked her what she meant and
she said they were teaching in
school that guns should not be kept
in the house and that she did not
approve of our taking them out of
the gun cabinet.
A Macon newspaper ran an
editorial page cartoon last week
showing a small child holding up a
bank with a note of approval from
the National Rifle Association.
This is a flagrant example of the
liberal, anti-gun media and their
irresponsible attack on the right to
own guns. The NRA has its own
gun safety program, for children
< Ilk
temperatures get below 30 degrees.
Gloves and warm long-johns are
always welcomed.
Flashlight - Even if you’re not an
outdoorsman, there'rc never enough
flashlights around the house. For
"throw-around" lights, I like the
lightweight plastic types loaded
with alkaline batteries and halogen
bulbs. For trips to the deer stand in
the predawn darkness, I prefer a
small mini-mag light that holds
two AA batteries. They arc only
about Sll and can be easily worn
on a belt.
Small camera - Forget those
heavy cameras that are so complete
that they allow you to set up your
own photo studio, you just don’t
need them. Some sportsmen who
own these bulky cameras don't
understand how to use them and
they get left in the closet.
Much preferred are what 1 call
’’idiot-proof’ cameras that arc small,
lightweight and fully automatic,
and arc considerably cheaper than
their larger counterparts. Better yet,
they arc reliable and deliver great
photos. Most photos that I take for
newspapers and magazines arc done
with a small, auto-focus Pentax
pocket camera. It easily slides into
my pocket, so I don't mind carrying
it around while hunting or fishing
and get natural "in the field"
photos. Many makes of cameras arc
available such as the Nixon
Smilctakcr, Minolta Freedom,
Canon Snappy or Pentax PC3I3.
By the way, Scars has the Pentax
on sale now in its Christmas
catalog for 545, a great buy. Many
used cameras arc available, too.
Drop by and see Calvin Maye or
Steve Rodgers at Wcllston Pawn or
shallows often discover the action
slows down when a cold front hits.
Again, the cold calls for a change in
tactics.
"When a sudden cold front hits,
fish abandon the shallows and head
for the nearest deep water, which
usually has a more stable tempera
ture. Holes and channels adjacent
to oncc-productivc Hats, bars or
oyster beds become hot spots,"
Shimano said.
Cold weather calls for a change in
tackle as well as tactics. Monofil
ament line becomes stiff in cold
water. It develops more "memory,"
meaning it remains coiled even after
spooling off of a reel, especially
spinning reels.
This reduces casting distance, ac-

called "The Eddie Eagle Gun Safely
Program". It teaches children a
simple message that could save the
lives of many people. The basic
message of the program for children
is if you sec a gun to: Stop! Don't
touch! Leave the area! Tell an adult
what you have seen!
The NRA and all thinking gun
owners are strongly opposed to any
type of firearm being made
available to children or kept in any
place where a child can gain access
to it. This cartoon was a blatant and
the newspaper should be ashamed to
have run it.
Another thing happening in our
schools is even more frightening
than the anti gun teachings. Cal
Thomas, a feature writer for The
Los Angeles Times brought this
out in an article this week.
He told of certain public schools
that no longer refer to Christmas by
its traditional name, but substitute
"winter holiday." Christmas parties
are okay for schools to hold, but

Journal
Terry Bridges at Parkway Pawn. A
good selection of sporting goods
can be found at Chuck's Bait &
Tackle or Sports Center in Perry.
Firearms - Most hunters
generally prefer to purchase their
own firearms, so this gift is
probably not a good idea unless
you know exactly what to buy.
Once you get by that problem, it's
possible to earn a very big hug on
Christmas morning.
My personal favorites arc the
Winchester Model 70 bolt-action in
.270 caliber with the featherweight
stock in green/gray laminated wood.
For a lever-action, look at the
Browning BLR in .308 caliber or a
Marlin.3o-.30. Auto fans should
pick the Browning over the
Remington, as the Remington
action hangs up too often.
For handguns, I recommend the
Smith & Wesson ,38/.357 caliber,
Model 686, in a 4-inch barrel with
stainless steel finish for the average
shooter. It takes a good shooter to
handle a 9-milimctcr semi-auto, so
1 would only recommend them for
serious shooters or law enforcement
officers. The Glock is lighter and
seems to recoil less to me than a
comparable S7W, so I give the
Glock a very slight-edge in
shootability.
For youngsters, a lever-cocking
BB gun may be tops on the list.
Daisy makes many excellent youth
guns, including the Model 111, or
the Red Ryder model. Only a parent
can judge a child's readiness to
handle a BB gun , but generally age
is about right for most kids to learn
to shoot under close adult
supervision.
Winch - Most adults wish they
had a winch when they gel stuck in
the mud. Although expensive at
about S4OO and up, winches are
priceless when you need one. A
Ramsey Rep 8000 low-profile
winch is mounted on the front of
my Ford Bronco, and I've found it
to be a superior piece of equipment.
They also make a 5,000 quick

must be called ’"holiday parties."
These particular schools were not
responding to a complaint or law
suit, just the possibility that
someone might be offended and that
the traditional references "could" be
unconstitutional.
Employees were instructed to
refer to Easter as "Spring Break" or
use other terminology that does not
convey religious meaning to
students.
The writer went on to say that at
the same time this is going on,
mandatory sex education is the rule
in every Virginia school. Children
as young as kindergarten must now
be sensitized to AIDS and gay and
lesbian lifestyles. But apparently
the words "Christmas" and "Easter"
are reguarded as a more clear and
present danger.
The American government, once
the protector and even reflector of
religious traditions and thinking,
has become an enemy of those with
religious faith. Thomas said that
"Under, our present government
traditional Christians and Jews are
the new counterculture, aliens in
the land their forefathers beliefs and
values established and built.
It is amazing at the similarity of
our present day governments
attitude toward religion and the

If you can't swing the money for
a winch, the hand-powered come
along will work in a pinch, and one
can be purchased at Sam’s
Warehouse for about S3O. A
20,000-pound snatch strap that
costs about $25 is another nice gift.
Fishing tackle - Fisherman, like
fish, come in all sizes, shapes and
colors. So do rods and reels.
However, don’t let the choices
confuse you. The company which
has been taking folks fishing for
more than 50 years. Zcbco, offers a
few simple suggestions for
selecting the right tackle.
For the very young angler, look
for one of the "fun theme" pre
packaged spincast combinations.
These rods and reels arc made
especially for little hands, and
usually come in exciting colors or
arc decorated with popular cartoon
characters. Examples arc Hot Reel,
Snoopy, Muppct and Disney
character combinations. All are
simple and easy to use, yet totally
functional.
In fact, a recent fishing
publication featured a cover shot of
a 5-ycar-old girl with a 5-pound
shark caught on her Mickey Mouse
rod and reel.
To shop for the more serious
anger, a little homework might first
be necessary. Try to determine if
there is a preference for a particular
kind of fishing or species.
For example, a person who likes
to fish for catfish or white bass
would favor a super-tough Rhino
rod in a medium-action, 5 1/2 to 6-
foot length, matched with a Zebco
33 or a Bullet .38 spincast reel.
Yet, a bass fisherman may prefer a
high-performance graphite rod and a
baitcast reel. Bass rods vary greatly
according to function, but a safe bet
for a good all-around model is a 60
footer in medium action.
Please see TRUSSELL, page 3B
from their schools and culture.
It is also amazing that as we
swing more and more away from
religion in our schools, the
Russians arc bringing it back into
theirs.
In November, a group of Russian
educators met with several
American religious leaders and
educators. The Russians asked the
group to bring teachers and Bibles
to their country's public schools
and restore the value and ethical
base they believe their children lost
during seven decades of atheistic
indoctrinnation. We arc trying to
wipe out religion in our schools
and the Russians are trying to bring
it back!
Is it any wonder that our schools
have problems with fighting, drugs,
alcoholism, sex and loafers when
the traditional values can no longer
he taught.
I have felt that the Constitution
has been grossly misinterpeted. It
does not say freedom "FROM"
religion, but freedom "OF"
religion.
How can the teaching or
observing of any religious beliefs
or . customs hurt an individual,
whether it be Christian, Jewish,
Moslem, the Native American
Indian Church or any other
religion?
