Robin Williams stars as Leslie Zevo, a whimsical toymaker who must save his father's
beloved toy factory from the clutches of his demented uncle, in Barry Levinson's
comedy "Toys."
'Toys' is a movie with good
intent but poor execution
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
"Toys" is one of those movies
that has good intent but poor execu
tion. It also has Robin Williams
who can draw an opening week au
dience to anything but can't hold
them with poor material. Thus this
movie should open strong but be
on a sharp decline after the first
weekend.
Williams, who is so brilliant as
the voice of the "genie" in
"Aladdin", is strangely subdued in
this film. He is cast as Leslie Zcbo,
the son of toy company owner
Donald O'Connor. As the movie
opens O'Connor is dying and has
decided to will his company to his
war loving brother Lcland (Michael
Gambon). He feels his son Leslie
and daughter Alsatia (Joan Cusack)
arc too immature to take the re
sponsibility of the business.
Lcland and his son Patrick (LL
Cool J) have a plan for the toy fac
tory and it is not a peaceful one.
They plan to manufacture war toys
that have the capacity to be real in
struments of destruction. When
Leslie learns of this he fights back
with his gentle toys in a surrealistic
battle of the manufacturers.
"Toys" is beautiful to watch. The
colors arc intense and the scenes of
endless wheat fields are soothing to
the eye. But Director Barry
Levinson is sporadic in his effects.
He spends much time underlying
the sweetness of Leslie and Alsatia
and then discards their characters to
concentrate on the war of the toys.
Company, in Canton, Ohio.
The groom-elect is the grandson
of Paul and Hazel Moore of
Pinchurst and James and Myrtle
Collins of Abbeville. He attended
Georgia Tech and earned a B.S. in
Mechanical Engineering. He is cur
rently employed with Morton
International in Rittman, Ohio.
The wedding is planned for 4
p.m. Jan. 23, 1992 at The Chapel
in North Canton, Oh.
He also interjects a brief romance
between Leslie and Gwen, one of
the factory workers, but never fol
lows up on it.
His worst fault as a director is in
the poor camera w’ork allowed in
the battle of the toys. It is as it the
camera was just yanked back and
forth to indicate chaos rather than
seeing how the battle was actually
going. It is a cheap effect in a big
budget movie.
None of the actors is outstanding
in his/her role. Joan Cusack comes
the closest to being unique but her
role ends up being so off the wall it
gels boring. Robin Wright looks
Start new habits to save energy
Looking for a New Year's
Resolution that can work in the
coming year? Why not start new
habits in 1993 that save energy. By
saving electricity in your home,
you can lower costs and help your
power supplier conserve precious
natural resources, too.

suggests these very easy tips for
family members to practice. Use

of laundry. Lower your water heater
temperature to 120 degrees F.
Completely fill the dishwasher be
fore washing the dishes.
And, don't forget your thermo

greenery accented with white rib

Angie Lewis of Woodstock and the

Kirby.
Ms. Cindy Stone of Pitts was
Maid of Honor. Bridesmaids were
gorgeous but acts vacant. LL Cool
J acts as if he wants to break into a
rap song but never does. Williams
acts as if he is still stuck in "Hook"
playing Peter Pan.
The movie is rated PG-13 for
profanity and some violence.
"Toys" appears to have been a
good idea that went wrong when
brought to the screen. Who the
villain was who tinkered with
Toys" is unknown, but there arc
many suspects from Levinson to
Williams. The movie is bright and
fantasmagorical but it is also plod
ding and much too long.
