By ANISSA CLEMONS
Staff Writer
Perry adds to its list of
churches The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints who
constructed their new building last
month on Houston Lake Road.
The building is the first phase
of three according to branch Presi
dent Dr. Peter Ventura.
“We hope to complete the sec
ond phase within the next year and
■ the third phase within two or three
years,” Ventura said.
To achieve additional phases to
the church building, the church has
to average an attendance of 130
people per week for over three
months.
y
, Ventura said Mormonism is
growing in Perry and surrounding
areas. “We currently have 177
members with about 80 from the
Perry area.”
He said the church’s first meet
ing in September of 1990 had about
45 members a week. “Now we av
erage about 90 members attending
V every week.”
The Perry branch of the church
was established to meet the needs of
the growing church. “We minister

The branch holds services on
Sundays from 9 a.m. until noon.
The first part of the service is the
Sacrament meeting. “This is where
we partake of bread and water in
remembrance of Christ and renew
our baptismal covenant.” A mem
ber of the congregation also speaks
during the first part of the service.
The second part of the service
is Sunday school. Ventura said they
