Ga. traffic deaths all-time low in ’92
The Georgia State Patrol says
that traffic deaths in the state will
likely hit a 10-year low for 1992
and set an all-time low death rate,
making motor vehicle travel in
Georgia the safest in motorized his
tory.
Georgia Public Safety
Commissioner Colonel Ronald L.
Bowman said analysis of year-end
figures show a projection of 1,275
traffic deaths in 1992, the lowest
since 1982, when 1,229 people died
on the stale's roadways. Last year,
1,393 people were killed in Georgia
traffic mishaps. Figuring the num
ber of deaths based on miles trav
eled, the rate of 2.3 per 100 million
miles of travel is the lowest on
record, he said. Miles traveled in
Georgia in 1992 increased by five
percent to more than 55 billion
miles.
The Patrol said final figures on
drunk driving deaths in Georgia are
also expected to be down signifi
cantly for 1992.
The improved traffic safely statis
tics arc welcomed news, said Col.
Bowman. "It is evident that we arc
finally seeing all the positive traffic
safety factors coming together."
Col. Bowman cited several reasons
for the improvements, including
both increased scat belt use and

drunk driving awareness, which arc
part of a national trend.
The key factors, all given equal
weight for contribution to the suc

54 percent in Georgia)
• greater enforcement cooperation
among state and local police agen

"None of these factors alone can
result in a successful effort to save
lives on our roadways,” said. Col.
Bowman. "But together, we arc see
ing some real progress being made.
These improvement give us incen
tive to re-double our efforts toward
better enforcement, better laws and
better administration of sanctions
against dangerous drivers. All those
in Georgia, who have a vested in
terest in traffic safety, can take pride
in the accomplishments collectively
made in 1992. From the
enforcement standpoint, we now
have our benchmark for 1993. Our
goal is to exceed the 1992 records.”
