nothing to lose I started wrestling
normally and I did all right. If I
wouldn't have been scared every
thing would have fallen into place.
He told me after the match that he
was scared of me. It gave me a lot
of confidence and I'm going to use
it as a measuring stick to keep
training," Rowland said.
Rowland and teammate Mike Jol
ley both won the West Laurens In
vitational and placed second in the
Hornet Classic in Adel.
"I wrestle Mike every day and he
knows every move I'm going to try
so it forces me to get better. I
know he's going to be in the finals
at these tournaments so I figured I'll
be there too," Rowland laughed.
Battling a cold last year during the
area tournament, Rowland placed
third. He was 20-8 as a sophomore
wrestling at 145. The third place
finish is a disappointment he plans
to make up for this year.
"I should have placed second at
least. That's what got me started
about dropping a weight class,"
Rowland said.
New wrestling coach Steve Has
senger praised Rowland after the
match with Grady and said he is un
likely to face a stronger wrestler in
his class the rest of the season.
"Coach Hassengcr was a wrestler
in college and if 1 can learn what he
knows, I'll know as much or more
than anybody else," Rowland said.
Rowland credits Coach Tony
Thrift for getting him started
wrestling and helping him get to
practice in the mornings.
"He's a good motivator. He used
to call my house at 5 a.m. every
morning to make sure I was up and
coming to practice. It's a little
easier now that we practice in the
afternoons. Before we'd practice for
two hours before school and that
was hard," Rowland said.
Rowland expects this to be his
last season in the lower weight
classes.
"Next year I'll probably wrestle
around 160-170. In the summer
when I was getting bigger, I wasn’t
thinking about wrestling, but then
we started practicing, my attitude
changed and I decided I wanted to be
the best," Rowland said.

I honestly felt like it was over
then.
After a long drive, Houston
botched a critical field goal. Buffalo
then drives downfield again and
scores on ridiculously bad coverage
by the Oilers.
Just a quick side note. Last year
Houston called a time out when
Denver was facing fourth and 10
with no time outs left. Elway took
control and Denver won. In this
game Houston continues to put
their fifth defensive back on Andre
Reed, one of the better receivers in
the NFL. Surprise, Reed burns
Houston for three touchdowns.
In overtime Moon gets intercepted
after the guy he was throwing to,
Ernest Givens was tackled while the
ball was still in the air.
Great comeback, Buffalo wins.
New Orleans jumped on the Ea
gles (my second favorite team) and
it looked like another exercise in fu
tility for Philadelphia.
Rather than watch another losing
effort, I went grocery shopping.
When I came back I got to see
Philly score 19 unanswered points
and win.
So in one afternoon, I went from
wildly cheering to disbelief then ir
ritation and frustration back to wild
cheering.
I guess that's what makes it fun,
all the swings in fortune, and glee
or despair when the gun sounds.
As happy as I am for the Eagles
and for Frank Reich (who deserves
truckloads of praise) I feel equally
bad for Warren Moon.
Now, I really dislike Dallas and
I'm kind of indifferent about all the
other games, so the mood swings
are likely to reappear next Sunday.

"I thought Arica Askew rebounded
very well tonight and she had one
of her best games of the season,"
Coach Tim Simmons said.
Billings stole the ball on three
consecutive Bear' possessions and
helped up the Perry lead from 17-
16, to 24-18 in the last three min
utes of the quarter.
Perry's lead grew to eight after
Thornton connected on two free
throws, before the Bears managed a
basket in the last minute of the
half.
Perry led at the half 26-20,
Billings again forced the action in
the third quarter scoring six points
and leading several Panther fast
breaks following rebounds by
Askew.
From the 6:49 mark of the quarter
to the 2:47 mark, Perry outscorcd
the Bears 14-2.
Perry was playing without start
ing center Angela Lcaggett and
back-up Takesia Rogers who were
both ill.
Simmons was pleased by the play
of freshmen Yatosha Davis, Natalie
Taylor and Shanetia Gilbert.

I was proud of the way the
freshmen played. They stepped up
and filled in very well. Our bench
has improved since the season be
gan," Simmons said.
Davis was the Panthers high
scorer in (he final eight minutes,
with 10 points.
Billings continued another strong
performance with nine fourth quar
ter points and three assists.
The Panthers had their highest
scoring quarter of the night in the
final eight minutes as they tallied
21 points.
"I felt good about the way wc
played defense tonight. We also did
a better job of shooting free throws.
Wc made 16 out of 26 which isn’t a
great percentage but it is an im
provement. We'll keep working on
the tilings we're doing and hope the
teams in our region arc having the
same problems wc arc in preparing
for opponents they've never played
before," Simmons said.
Perry begins regular region play
Friday night as they host Ware
County and Saturday they travel to
Appling County.
Gann closed out a memorable
fourth quarter with a three pointer.
The win moved the Panthers to 5-
1 on the season.
The Panthers region schedule get
underway as they host Ware County
Friday night and travel to Appling
County Saturday night.
WHS girls
hold off FPD
50-45
By DAVID JAHNS
Special to The HHJ
The Westfield Lady Hornets won
their second game in a row, defeat
ing the FPD Lady Vikings 50-45
Tuesday night.
The win makes the girls record
4-3.
The Lady Hornets full court press
helped them score a dozen of their
points.
April Horsting led the way for
the Lady Hornets in the first half
scoring 12 of her game high 20
points.
Kim Marshall and Jill Barr scored
four points each while three other
Hornets had two points each in the
first half.
Westfield's press helped them gain
a 27-15 halftime lead.
"They played the first half ex
tremely well. Our younger players
are starting to come up and play
better," Coach Donna Campbell
said.
Freshman Jennifer Smith scored
eight of her nine points in die sec
ond half.
FPD opened the second half with
six straight points cutting the
Westfield lead to six before the
Lady Hornets got back on track.
Westfield then scored seven
straight points and prevented the
Lady Vikings from scoring for four
minutes in the diird quarter.
Westfield led after three quarters
40 to 27.
In the fourth quarter, Westfield
had problems moving the ball up
court against the FPD press.
Adding to their ball handling prob
lems was the loss of guard Laura
Langston who had to sit down for
three minutes in the middle of the
quarter with four fouls.
"We arc weak in the guard spot
when we lose Laura," Campbell
said.
Langston came back in with 3:45
left but fouled at with 2:47 to play.
With 55 seconds left in the game
and the Lady Hornets clinging to a
six point lead, Horsting had to use
two timeouts because the Lady
Viking's press was preventing
Westfield from inbounding the ball.
"April was smart using the time
outs. One expects a Senior to make
those kinds of decisions."
After the time outs, the Lady
Hornets were able to hang on to
their lead.
Westfield travels to Macon to play
Stratford Friday night.
Campbell said she saw
improvement from the team's last
performance, a 34-25 victory over
Flint River.
"We've been inconsistent.
Tonight we played hard in the
second half and I'm much more
pleased than I was after the Flint
River game," she said.
