* Approximately 25.5 million
acres of farmland arc on the
conservation reserve program.
* Effective 1/1/90, almost 1
million farms had approved
conservation programs that were to
be fully implemented by 1994.
* The quantity, quality, and

contribute to longevity. Since
1900, the average life span of a
child born in the U.S. has increased
from 47.3 years to 74.7 years.
* To develop a new crop

$35 million-most of which is spent
on testing for safety.

Hunting deer with a handgun is
not for everyone, obviously, but
just as blackpowdcr and bowhunters
tend to be the most experienced
hunters in the woods, the same
applies to handgun hunters. They
arc all looking for a more
challenging hunting experience
where their skills are put to the
ultimate test. Proficiency with the
handgun is a skill that must be
learned over a period of years, and
then that shooting skill must be
teamed with excellent hunting
ability to consistently succeed.
Handgun hunters are drawn to
White Oak Plantation not only for
the special handgun hunt, but also
for the trophy deer known to

more punch, look at the .454

If you think it is time to add even
more challenge to your days afield
trying to outsmart a trophy

candidate to become a handgun

firearms arc wide, and the state of
Alabama offers plenty of deer to
test your abilities.

The scenario isn't very pretty for

dominate the game or he can render
the Eagle offense virtually useless.
I think Dallas will win based on
all the available data, but I'm going

San Diego at Miami.
It seems like the Dolphins have
been using smoke, mirrors and a
weak schedule to get this far.
I can't imagine how Miami will
beat the Chargers who are playing
as well as anybody light now.
Miami won’t be able to run the
ball, their best run defender just had
surgery and the Chargers can pres
sure Marino up the middle which he
doesn't like.
The fact that the Dolphins are fa
vored amzaes me.
Kansas City is top to bottom
stronger than Miami and the Charg
ers shut them out.
It's going to be Marino and his re
ceivers against a better team. They
should make it interesting for
awhile and the match-up between
Shula and his one time star assis
tant Bill Arnsparger makes an inter
esting sub text.
San Diego should dominate this
one.

"We have quail hunts, dove
shoots, squirrel shoots, there are
wild pigs and I raise deer for hunters
to shoot,” Bixler said.
Bixler is teaching his five sons,
(he is the oldest of four boys) to
hunt the "old fashioned way." If
you shoot deer or birds on my land
then you walk. There is no hunt
ing from jeeps or vehicles. If
you’re hunting from a jeep, it's not
really hunting," he said.
A native of Carroll County,
Maryland, Bixler grew up on his

the duck hunting which is
becoming another popular sport on
the lake.
Lake Seminole has emerged in
the past few years as one of the
premier duck hunting areas of the
extreme Southeastern states, the
noxious weed, Hydrilla, which is
much cussed by fishermen and boat
operators is responsible for the fast
growth of the duck hunting.
Seminole has always had a good
population of puddle ducks such as
mallards and wood ducks. As the
weed spread across the lake, the
diving ducks such as Ringnccks and
Blucbills starting frequenting the
lake in large numbers.
My son, Rob and I were invited
to hunt ducks on Seminole last
weekend by our good friend. Monty
Lewis of Thomasville. Monty is
one of the best duck hunters in
South Georgia and hunts almost
every day of our short duck season.
We drove down to Thomasville
and spent Saturday night with the
Lewis's. We got up at 4:15 and
drove for an hour to reach
Seminole.
I’m afraid that most Georgia
ducks hunters ideas of duck hunting
consists of wading out into a beaver
pond at dusk and shooting
woodducks as they come in to
roost. This is not only illegal, but
many ducks are lost in the dark.
Most of these hunters do not stop
with their limit of two ducks.
Monty doesn't hunt that way. He
has a large flat bottomed boat
equipped with a frame and
camouflage sides that drop into
place. He has hundreds of decoys
which are carefully placed to attract
the ducks.

Suwannee, Fla. - Sand Trout have been biting extremely well

biting live shrimp. Some Mangrove Snapper has been reported

"We raised dairy cows and from
the time I was six years old I had to
get up at 4 a.m. every day gather
the cows so we could milk them.
We had a creek running through our
property about the size of Big In
dian Creek and I would take a cane
pole, or strings from the hay bales,
or gather some rocks and I’d use 'em
to fish in that creek everyday. I al
ways got in trouble because I'd take
100 long bringing the cows back
in," Bixler laughed.
We hunted in the upper reaches of
the lake where the Chattahoochee
River enters it. We had placed out
decoys and were silting back
wailing for the ducks by sunrise.
We saw large amounts of
wildlife. The lowly Cool played in
the water around us and filled the air
with their strange cries. We saw
hundreds of sea gulls and then the
ducks came. Monty assured us that
the hunting was not nearly as good
as it usually was, but to two middle
Georgia duck hunters, who do not
sec ducks, it was excellent.
We killed seven ducks, which
was two short of the limit of three
ducks per person. If you base the
value of duck hunting on the
number of birds taken against the
cost of the hunt, it is a poor
proposition. A hunting license cost
$8.50, a Federal Duck Stamp cost
$15.00, a State Duck Stamp cost
$5.00 and a box of steel shot shells
cost $15.00. That is $43.50 and if
you have to invest in a boat, two
hundred decoys and fuel, it really
gets expensive.
A hunter should never look at the
amount of game taken as a measure
of his success and especially should
not try to justify the return for the
money spent with his wife. The
companionship of fellow hunters,
the dogs, seeing the sun come up
across the wilderness lake and just
being there are the important
things.
I found Seminole to be a
fascinating lake. The area we hunted
is very wild and beautiful. The word
Seminole is an Indian derivation of
the Spanish word Cimmaron which
means wild or untamed. The name
trulv fits the lake.
Perry Middle looking for top seedings
The Perry Middle School basket

Middle Tuesday and Wednesday to
draw a step closer to number one
seeds for the county championship
tournament.
The seventh grade girls rolled to a
35-13 win. Kamari Toomcr and
Shaniqua Howard led the way with
18 points between them.
"They tried a half court trap but
our guards were too quick for them
and we outscored them 29-10 in the
second half. If we win Friday, we
should be the number one seed for
the tournament. If we lose we'll
have to flip a coin to determine the
number one seed" Coach Danny
Shelton said Friday afternoon.
Lachrista King, Findley and
Shaniq Scott added four points each.
The seventh grade boys won their
fourth game in a row with a 40-36
win. Warner Robins had routed the
Panthers in their first meeting but
Perry took control early Tuesday
and held on to win.
"We kept getting ahead and letting
them back in the game. The pres
sure was tough on our kids but they
learned from it. They decided
amongst themselves where they
should go on the door against the
press. We had too many turnovers
but they did well against the pres
sure overall. Frederick Marshall
had his best overall game of the
season. He had nine points, eight
rebounds and six steals, he played a
good, well rounded game," Coach
Bob Cook said.
John Brewer and Justin White
scored eight points each. Frank
Jackson scored five points, Reggie
Clark and Dundee Martin scored
four points each.
The eighth grade girls won 38-23
after outscoring Warner Robins 14-
