Begin exercising regularly in 1993
It is important that one's
metabolism and genes, along with
the eating and exercise habits devel
oped over a lifetime, influence
whether a person will become
overweight and out of shape or not.
But studies show that to keep fit
and trim it's a good idea to spend at
lease some of your free time doing
something more strenuous than sit
ting in front of the television.
Regular physical activity not
only increases strength and coordi
nation, but also boosts self confi
dence and provides a release from
stress. Exercise helps people look
and feel better. On average, fit stu
dents do better in school than those
who arc sedentary. Regular aerobic
exercise also strengthens the heart
and decreases the risk of cardiovas
cular disease.
What Type Or Exercise Is
Best?
Any type of physical activity
will bum calories and help tension.
But exercises which are aerobic are
the only type that promote cardio
vascular fitness. Aerobic exercise
forces the heart and lungs to work
Prepare
mowers
for spring
To have your lawnmower or tiller
in top condition for spring action,
take a few minutes to prepare it for
the winter. A little foresight can
make spring cranking and operation
easier. Here arc the steps to ensure
that your mower or tiller stays in
top condition:
* Don't leave gasoline in the tank
over the winter because it will gum
the fuel lines. This will make it dif
ficult to start the machine in the
spring.
* First, drain the fuel tank.
Instead of tilting the mower, use a
siphon to empty out most of the
gas. Then run the engine until it
stalls to drain the tank and the car
buretor.
* Disconnect the spark plug wire
and drain out all of the oil while the
engine is still warm from being
run.
* Remove the spark plug with a
spark plug wrench. If it appears to
be in good condition, clean the elec
trodes with kerosene and a stiff
brush.
* Use a spark plug gauge to check
the gap between the electrodes, fol
lowing the recommendation found
in your owner's manual. If neces
sary, adjust the gap.
* If the spark plug is badly
fouled, buy a new one.
* Pour about two tablespoons of
fresh engine oil into the spark plug
hole. This prevents corrosion dur
ing storage. Don't refill the
crankcase at this time.
* Next, use the starter cord or the
electric starter to turn the engine
about six times. This allows the oil
to spread through the cylinder and
coat the wall and piston rings.
* Replace the spark plug, turning
it by hand, to be sure that the
threads engage properly. Then
tighten firmly with the spark plug
wrench.
* Thoroughly clean the mower or
tiller and its engine. Remove all
caked mud and grass from the
engine cooling fins. With the spark
plug wire still disconnected, turn
the mower/tiller on its side.
* Use a stiff wire brush to clean
the blades or tines and the underside
of the mower deck.
* To retard rusting, spray pene
trating oil on all exposed shafts,
linkage, sprockets or gears, chains
and axles.
* Spray all other bare metal parts
of the housing and deck's underside
with a waterproof protective coating
or matching spray paint.
* Refill the crankcase with clean
engine oil.
* Re-connect the spark plug
wire.
* If your mower has an electric
starter, remove the battery and store
it over the winter in a dry place.

harder by using the large working
muscles, such as the legs. This in
creases the flow of blood back to
the heart, making the heart and
blood vessels become stronger.
Aerobic exercise requires that the
lungs expand and take in more oxy
gen with each breath to provide for
the working muscles.
To be considered aerobic, exer
cises have to be brisk, but not ex
hausting, and done for 20-40 min
utes continuously without interrup
tion. For example, hiking, jogging,

bicycling, swimming laps and aer
obic dancing would be considered
aerobic exercises.
Many sports are high in intensity
but done for short periods of time.
Football, baseball, volleyball,
weight lifting and running or
swimming short distances (200 yard
dash, 50 yard swim) arc classified as
anaerobic activities because of this.
Those who enjoy these activities
should also try to fit some aerobic
exercises into their routine
How much is enough?
The American Heart Association
recommends that aerobic exercise be
done three to four times a week for
about 20-30 minutes at a time.
Ideally, it should be strenuous

enough so that you arc exerting
yourself, but not so strenuous that
you can't carry on a conversation.
Begin exercising slowly to give
your body a chance to limber up
and get ready for more vigorous ex
ercise. Stretching or walking
slowly arc both good ways to warm
up. After vigorous exercise, slow to
a more leisurely pace to allow your
body to cool down.
It’s a good idea to check with
your physician before starting an
exercise program. For someone
Journal
who hasn't been exercising, 20
minutes may he too much to start
out with, but it's a good goal to
work towards. Figuring out your
target heart rate will help you avoid
overexertion. 11 you arc interested in
losing weight, you may need to ex
ercise five to seven days a week to
achieve results.
As far as when to exercise, most
people feel comfortable if they wait
at least an hour after a meal. This
may require juggling meal schcd-
