Society of
teachers
meet Jan. 9
The Alpha Lambda Chapter of
the Delta’ Kappa Gamma Society
held its monthly meeting Jan. 9 at
the New Perry Hotel.
Membership in the society is
composed of teachers in Houston,
Peach, Crawford, Taylor and Macon
counties.
Addis Colvin opened the meeting
with an inspirational talk. The
Chapter chose to place a book in
the library in memory of Alton
Hardy, whose wife Dorothy, has
been a long-time member.
Personal Growth and Services
Chairman Bonnie March presented a
program on family connection.
Family connection is a teamwork
group. There are six of these groups
in Houston County schools, three
in Perry and three in Warner
Robins. This prevention type pro
gram offers services in the home
environment. The program is open
to donations and operates on these
donations.
Delta Kappa Gamma members
have adopted this project for a na
tional project. Members of each
count are to establish a needs list
and all society members will help
to supply the needs of the project.
Members of the Perry area who
were present were Emily Heath,
president; Faye Doane,
parliamentarian; Addis Colvin,
Brenda Bullard, Kim Belcher, Ann
Lantcr, Linda Locwen, Susan Pierce
and Margaret Talton.
The next meeting is scheduled for
March 13.
All homes
should be
insulated
One way to keep healing costs
from going through the roof is to
make sure your attic has enough in
sulation. Its a safe bet that any
house built more than 15 years ago
needs insulation.
How insulation works
Tiny air pockets in insulating
materials resist the transfer of heat,
keeping heat inside your home in
cold weather and outside in warm.
The ability to resist heat How is
measured in R values (for
Resistance factor).
The higher the R factor, the
greater the insulation value. So al
ways buy insulation on the basis of
R value, not thickness. The rec
ommended R value for the Middle
Georgia area is R-30 for ceilings
and R-l 1 for floors.
Installing insulation
To determine the square footage
of insulation needed, multiply the
length by the width of the attic
floor. A vapor barrier is a crucial
part of any insulating material. If
using insulation with vapor-barrier
attached, start by laying batts or
blankets, vapor barrier down, at the
outer edges of the attic and work
toward the center. This way you can
do any cutting or fitting in the area
with the most headroom.
Another important consideration:
Never block eave vents. Adequate
airflow above attic insulation is
essential.
Safety considerations
Flint EMC recommends that you
take the necessary safety precau
tions if you plan to work with in
sulation. Wear safety glasses, a
breathing mask and gloves. For
more information on this subject,
call Flint EMC's Member Services
Department.
