The first shot that he made hit the

Snow, who has traveled over the

people who hunt boars, that it
brought out a primordial feeling

The EPA uses the lowest NOEL

So, is our food safe?
In response to that question, Dr.

successful clear-cut quail hunting,
well-trained dogs that can cover
large tracts of land are an absolute
necessity. O'Dowd has tried
various breeds of dogs and chose the
setter breed as the one with the
personality and hunting style which
best suited him. O'Dowd trains his
own dogs year-round and keeps the,
in a pen in his backyard. He trains
them to hunt within sight because
it's easy to lose a dog in thick
clcarcuts. Also, it's frustrating to
lose contract with the dog and know
that he's probably on point
somewhere, waiting for the hunter
to show up. Electronic collars are
useful for quickly teaching the dogs
his hunting style.
O'Dowd has found that wild
clearcut quail don't hold point very
long, if they hold point at all, so
the hunter and dogs have to stay
pretty close contact with each other.
He doesn't like for his dog to get
more than 100 yards or so, for the
above reason.
Like many quail hunters, O'Dowd
believes good dog work is a big
part of enjoyable quail hunting, and

he has a personal relationship with
his dogs that makes them more
than just dogs. They arc long-term
hunting companions, and the

While it might work well to sit
in the truck as you drive slowly
behind the digs in more traditional
style field-type quail hunting, rarely
can you drive much around a clear
cut. Land on Oaky Woods and
Ocmulgcc WMAs is usually cut in
sections from several hundred to a
few thousand acres and is quick;y
replanted in pines, which is off
limits to vehicles. So, basically,
O'Dowd said if you want to roust

"hoof it." Oaky Woods and
Ocmulgcc arc close to home, it's
easy to leave work a little early and
still get in some good hunting.
Perry hosts Dodge County
By BRIAN LAWSON
Sports Editor
Perry hosts Dodge County
tonight as they begin the second
half of their region schedule.
The Panthers are currently atop
the GHSA region 2AAA standings
with a 5-0 record and they arc 9-2
overall.
In assessing the season to date
Coach Carl Thomas praised his
team's performance Friday.
"I'm very pleased with the season
overall. I'm more pleased with
some individuals than others, but
most of our key individuals have
stepped up and we have really pun
ished some folks," he said.
The Panthers first three games
after the Christmas break produced
two games where they scored over
100 points and the margin of vic
tory in the three games was nearly
45 points per game.
"Right now Eric Richardson is
having an outstanding post-
Christmas season. He's raised his
shooting percentage to 55 percent
and since the break he has made 24
of 37 field goals. He was 4 for 20
on three pointers, since the break he
is 11 for 19 shooting threes and
he's raised his scoring average to
14.1 points per game," Thomas
said.
Thomas believes Richardson
raised his game after he realized the
Panthers need him to be more ac
tive offensively and look for his
shot.
"Eric was passing the ball too
much. I think he came to realize 1
want him to establish his own
game," Thomas said.
Sophomore Garrictt Curry has hit
19 of his last 33 field goal attempts
and Thomas said the individual
progress of Curry has been a major
factor in the team’s success.
Heading into the second half of
the region schedule Thomas said lie
expects a very tough game with ri
val Dodge County (3-1 in region
play before Friday's game with
Wayne County), but that a win
tonight will pul Perry in a very
good spot for the region title.
"If we win Saturday night that
will put us two up on Dodge
County and we're through playing
them and they will have to play

again at Wayne County. But if we
lose tomorrow night, the region
will really be up for grabs. Perry
against Dodge County is one of
those games you always look
forward to and Dodge's Arthur
Etheridge is one of the finer players
in our area," Thomas said.
Perry's future success this season
will depend on their ability to keep
opponents off the boards.
In their loss to Peach County,
Thomas said the Panthers gave up
22 points on pulbacks. For the
season. Perry has outrebounded
their opposition 191 to 140. But
they have given as many putback
baskets, 62, as they have scored.
"We're not a strong, physical
team, which means we have to be
intelligent to keep the other team
from getting rebounds. If we're go
ing to do any damage on the state
level we'll have to improve in that
area," Thomas said.
