Stafford, third from left, was awarded for his
achievements in soil and water resource protection in
Houston County.
Stafford named conservationist
of the year by Ocmulgee district
Selected for his outstanding ac
complishments in conservation,
Houston County Commission
Chairman Sherrill Stafford has been
named Conservationist of the Year
by the Ocmulgee River Soil &
Water Conservation District.
Stafford's achievements represent
the highest ideals in soil and water
resource protection in Houston
County. For these efforts a banquet
and awards program were held
Thursday night, Feb. 4, at the Fort
Valley State College Pettigrew
Center for him and the eight other
county winners across the District.
The Georgia Bankers Association
along with local banks jointly
sponsored this event with the
Ocmulgee River District. More
than 200 people attended this pro
gram and were able to see, first
hand, the movers and shakers in
natural resource conservation.
Heading up conservation efforts
in Houston County are District
Supervisors David Muse and
Richard Johnson. These men have
dedicated themselves to protecting
the soil and water and caring stew
ards of these resources, like
Stafford, are great proponents of the
conservation cause.
The Ocmulgee River District is
composed of a nine county area in
cluding Bibb, Crawford, Dooly,
Houston, Macon, Peach, Pulaski,

future to ensure that the bird does
not become extinct.
“In the Northwest environmental
issues have been in the forefront
because of the Spotted Owl,” he
said. “Now we are about to Find out
what such a batde involves because
of the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker.”
Because Vice-President A1 Gore
is known to have strong views on
environmental issues, Thompson
expects more federal and state regu
lations concerning the protection of
plants and animals to be passed.
