'Sommersby' is pure movie magic
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
The pairing of Jodie Foster and
Richard Gere in the new film
"Sommersby" is one of those rare
times of pure movie magic. These
two immensely talented actors pos
sess the perfect screen chemistry to
ignite the story of Jack and Laurel
Sommersby. It is not done with
naked bodies or near pornographic
couplings, but rather with looks,
sighs and body language.
In the film Jack Sommersby
(Gere) returns to his home after be
ing away for six years. He was a
Confederate soldier and spent most
of the war in a Yankee prison.
While he was gone his wife Laurel
(Foster) began to see a man named
Orrin (Bill Pullman), but now that
Jack is back he is out of the pic
ture.
But everything is not perfectly
rosy here. Jack is kind and consider
ate to Laurel and their son but he
has a strange tendency to forget im
portant people and events in his
pre-war life. Plus there is the mys
tery of why his foot has shrunk two
sizes since he left.
The question of is he or isn't he
really Jack Sommersby makes up
the crucial plot question of
"Sommersby". The climax of the
film is much more intense than this
however and leaves the audience
moved in a way few films in a long
time have done. Bring your
handkerchiefs, for this one is a
weeper.
Gere is at his best as Jack
Sommersby. He creates a character
who is strong and fair to all with
whom he comes in contact, regard
less of their rank in life or their
skin color. He is also a courtly
gentlemen in his pursuit of Laurel
and his rush to make her forget the
type of man he was before the war.
As Laurel, Jodie Foster is just
plain girlish. In the past she has
always chosen roles that made her
brash and bold. Laurel is strong
willed on the surface but at heart
she is a woman who is giddily in
love with her man. Never would I
have imagined Foster capable of
displaying the kind of passion she

does in this role. It is another
wonderfully full acting job by a
superbly talented actress.
"Sommersby" is based on the
French film "The Return of Martin

thing to Charles Dickens' "A Tale
of Two Cities". But other plotlines
not withstanding, this movie re
gales its audience with intelligence

Bell explained that now is the
time to be preparing for many of
the jobs that are needed for a pretty,
well groomed lawn. Fertilization
and weed control plans should be
drawn and action taken by mid-
March.
"That's why we have planned this

and feeling for this extra good
movie.
The film is rated PG-13 for pro-

The workshop will feature three
top turf specialists with the
University of Georgia Extension
Service. Drs. Gil Landry, Tim
Murphy and Ed brown will be on
the program to discuss topics such
as turf maintenances, weed control
and disease control.
"With the kind of winter we have

fanity and violence.
Gere lit up the screen when he
pursued Debra Winger and Julia
Roberts in other movies, but this
time his passion is even more ex
plosive with the plain but radiant
Foster. If the age of romantic
movies is dawning, then
"Sommersby" should lead the
charge into that new era.
I scored "Sommersby" a love
