Film points out importance of reading
"Reading Aloud: Motivating
Children to make books into
friends, not enemies," an 80-minute
color film by best-selling author
Jim Trelease, will be shown to par
ents, teachers and the general public
Feb. 23 at Tucker Elementary
School beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Trelease is the author of The Read-
Aloud Handbook.
"The decline in American liter
acy,” Trelease declares, "is due
largely to the fact that our children
no longer want to read. We must
recognize that children are not bom
with the desire to read. That desire
must be planted and reading aloud
to the child is the oldest and most
successful method of instilling that
desire.”
For 20 years, Trelease was an
award-winning artist and writer for a
major New England daily newspa
per. During this period he spent
considerable time visiting class
rooms and talking with students
about the joys of reading. In 1979,
he self-published a 30-page booklet
for parents and teachers on the sub
ject of reading aloud. Two years
later, Penguin Books signed him to

Elements of the five-ship ready

group was also deployed to the
coast of Somalia in support of the
relief effort Operation Restore
Hope.
The exercises follow the Navy's
new strategy, entitled "...From the

focus from a global threat to re

on near-land warfare and maneuver

do a 224-page expanded edition. The
trade paperback sold more than a
quarter million copies in its first
year, spent 17 weeks on The New
York Times bestseller lost and was
selected by two major bookclubs.
In this film, Trelease looks be
yond the declining national skills
and student scores, pointing instead
to the encouraging results when
parents and teachers serve as posi
tive role models. He makes a spe
cial point of reminding his viewers
that it is humanly possible-as well
as preferable-for fathers to be intel
lectually, as well as athletically,
involved in children's lives.
Using an anecdotal style that
rings of humor and enthusiasm,
Trelease traces the need for reading
aloud from the cradle to
adolescence. He cites dozens of
titles and demonstrates the
techniques involved in reading
aloud.
The father of two children,
Trelease warns of the danger from
children "overdosing" on television
and offers a simple step-by-step
plan by which parents can fend off
