Humorous tales from
the campaign trail
By ANISSA CLEMONS
Staff Writer
Saxby Chambliss, a former
eighth district congressional candi
date from Moultrie, shared his cam
paign trail experiences with local
Kiwanians Tuesday.
Chambliss, who campaigned last
summer against Bob Cunningham
and Roy Rowland, said, “I didn’t
like losing. I’m the worst loser in
the world, but I had a fabulous
experience.”
He said, “I never wanted to run
for political office, but I had a con
cern for the way our country is
headed.”
The Republican attorney covered
32 counties from the Florida line to
the north part of Macon. “There are
three things I learned right off the
bat,” Chambliss said.
“I learned not to make long
speeches,” he said. Chambliss told
Kiwanians he was speaking at a
Sertoma Club meeting one time
when a member fell asleep. “I told
the guy next to him to wake him
up. He said ‘You wake him up, you
put him to sleep.’.”
He said he also learned to pick
and choose the right restaurants
since he traveled 20,000 miles
while he campaigned. Another les
son Chambliss learned was, “not
everyone keeps up with current af
fairs.”

He said he went in a restaurant
one time, and it was raining a lot.
Chambliss told the waitress it re
minded him of the big flood. She
said what big flood. Chambliss said
Noah and the Ark. The waitress said
“I haven't watched the news lately.”
Chambliss said he learned to ac
cept being misquoted in the press.
He said politicians need to learn the
issues and to ask “everybody to
vote for you.”
He said it’s also helpful to have
the support of good friends. When
asked if he plans to run again,
Chambliss said he probably would.

Hospitality and
tourism attract
tourists to area
By ROBIN BOOKER
Staff Writer
Marty Willet, director of the
Bibb County Convention and
Tourism Bureau, told the Perry Ex
change Club Thursday that net
working hospitality and tourism is
a vital part of the tourism industry.
Willet, also known as Sidney
Lanier in Macon, conducts the Sid
ney Lanier Tour in Macon that
highlights Macon’s historic district.
Willet explained that it is important
for mid-state communities to work
together to promote the area.
“We are all here in the heart of
Georgia and it is crucial that we
work together to promote our ar
eas,” Willet said. “We have so
much to offer visitors to this area
and we can all help each other.”
Willet said Perry has one of
Middle Georgia’s best tourist attrac
tions in the state in the Agricenter
and that the more people attracted to
events being held in Perry, the
more money the city makes.
“The key in the tourism trade is
hospitality because when you are
friendly to people, they stay in your
area longer,” he said. “When
tourists stay longer, they spend
more money, and that’s good for
the area.”
