Cooper's predictions for the Oscars
By JACKIE COOPER
HHJ Entertainment Writer
There has been very little hoopla
about this year's Oscar race, but
you can be sure that when the stat
uettes are handed out on Monday,
March 29, the ratings for the televi
sion coverage on ABC will be
high. This may have more to do
with special events at the show
than with the winners and losers
themselves.
It is bound to be a tearful occa
sion when both the recently de
ceased Audrey Hepburn and the ever
ailing Elizabeth Taylor are pre
sented with special achievement
awards. There are also bound to be
reminiscences of Helen Hayes and
Lillian Gish.
Plus the ever delightful Billy
Crystal will once again be hosting
the event and his "push-up" buddy
Jack Palan'ce will be presenting an
award. This reunion will preceded
the next reunion of the two actors
in "City Slickers II" which goes be
fore the cameras this summer.
As far as the Oscars themselves, I
predict the following will occur
Best picture; I would love to see
"Scent of k Woman" or "A Few
Good Men" be recognized, but in
reality I think "Howard's End" will
win. I can accept anything but
"Unforgiven" taking this award.
Best Actor - Denzel Washington
("Malcom 'X'") should be the one
to take home the gold. I have a feel
ing he may just squeak by A1
Pacino ("Scent of A Woman").
There has been a lot of buzz about
Clint Eastwood ("Unforgiven") but
the statue he gets Oscar night will
not be for his acting.
AARP needs
items for their
flea market
The Perry Chapter of the
American Association of Retired
Persons (AARP) wants to collect
all items discarded as a result of
spring cleaning for the group’s an
nual Flea Market scheduled for
April 3.
Call Don Norris (987-2901),
Walt Rembisz (987-1908) or
Louise Sturgis (987-3723) and
someone will come by to collect ar
ticles.
Proceeds of the Flea Market will
be used to help Meals on Wheels
and other organizations that help
the needy.

Best Actress- Emma Thompson
("Howard's End") is going to win
this award or it will be the upset of
the evening. Only Susan Sarandon
("Lorenzo's Oil") stands a prayer of
coming close.
Supporting Actor - There is
where A1 Pacino ("Glengarry Glen
Ross") will win. I would prefer
Jack Nicholson ("A Few Good
Men") but that movie just didn't get
the respect is deserves.
Supporting Actress -1 think Judy
Davis ("Husbands and Wives”) has
a lock on this. But it would be nice
to see Marisa Tomei ("My Cousin
Vinny") represent this country and
win over her British competition.
Director -1 would have liked to
have seen Rob Reiner ("A. Few
Good Men") win in this category

but he wasn't even nominated. So I
guess Clint Eastwood
("Unforgiven") will be the choice.
Still I think he is getting it for all
of his work and not this last moody
western.
Rpci Song - Once again I have
included my prediction in this cate
gory just for fun. Usually I have
never even heard of the songs being
nominated. This year it is basically
a contest between the songs from
"The Bodyguard" and those from
"Aladdin." I will predict "A Whole
New World" to be the winner and
that is fine with me.
The Oscar show will air on ABC,
March 29 at 9 p.m. Immediately
preceding it will be anew "Barbara
Walters Special." ABC rules the
airways on Oscar night and I will
be right there watching it all.
