Dogwood fun for all By ROBIN BOOKER Staff Writer In a flurry of activity and a whirlwind of events, the fifth an nual Dogwood Festival has come and gone. The task now left to planners of the event is to evaluate the success of the festival so an even bigger and better festival can be planned for next year. Although the weather was not cooperative on all fronts, clear skies prevailed Saturday to allow a large crowd to wander around downtown, sampling the food, checking out the craft vendors and enjoying a variety of entertainment. A good-sized group turned out Sunday for Family Day at Rozar Park as well, even though it did rain throughout the afternoon. "We had about 50 vendors from around the Southeast, including lo cal artisans as well," said Karen Nikitopoulos, coordinator of the street vendors. "We had a tremen dous turnout and the vendors were very pleased with the reception they received in Perry." Attendance at this year's festival is thought to have been higher than last year's, although final statistics are not in on all events. "We had great attendance at al most all Dogwood events," said Perry Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice-President Peggie Williams. "With the exception of low turnout for the street dance Friday night, I would say we had better attendance at most events than last year." Plans are already in the making for next year's festival, with high hopes to improve even more on the schedule of events. Larry Walker told the Perry Kiwanis Club the legislature accomplished a great many feats, many of which directly affect Perry and Houston County. "When we don't do everything Atlanta wants, then we hear that we had a bad session," said Walker. "However, we passed a great deal of legislation that will benefit the state and this area, and I’m proud of what we did accomplish." Officers of the Perry Police De partment were summoned to six separate incidents of hubcap thefts at four Perry motels early Saturday. Total loss has been estimated at $2,300. The hubcap thefts follow a re cent rash of burglaries which re sulted in approximately $2,700 in cash and property being stolen from various local hotel/motel occu pants. Both groups of crimes are still under investigation by local law enforcement. “Because this is not the first time we have had hubcaps stolen from cars in hotel and motel park ing lots, we are not sure if these perpetrators are the same ones in volved in last week’s burglaries,” said Captain Steve Heaton of the Perry Police Department. “We are still running down leads on sus pects in all the incidents.” Perry motels plagued by the weekend hubcap thefts were Hampton Inn, Days Inn, Holiday Inn and Quality Inn. All hubcaps stolen were of the wire wheel variety and were taken from three Buick Lesabres, two Buick Centurys and one Cadillac Dcville.
