Death, of Prof. Merck.
Prof. George G. Merck died at his
home here Thursday morning at 6.00
o’clock. He \yas a native of Murray
county, but had been a resident of
Gainesville for several years, and had
a large number of friends and ac
quaintances here. Prof. Merck lived
in Boston for a loner time before his re
moval here, and his talent gained for
him there quite a reputation as a musi
cian, and the fact that several of his
pupils hold positions in the Boston
Conservatory is an evidence of his abil
ity as a teacher of music?.
His wife, whom he married in Boston,
survives him, and has the sympathy of
many friends. Mr. Merck’s remains
were interred in Alta Vista cemetery
at 11 o’clock a. m. Eridav.
Funston has gone to talking at dinner
parties again, only he seems to have
learned something, for now he says:
“I don’t look like a hero; I don’t feel
like a hero; I amJsimply a lucky dog.”

Mrs. Felton .Lectures.
A literary treat that was thoroughly
appreciated by a large number of cul
tured people of the city, was the lec
tures on the evening of the 7th and the
morning of the 8th bv Mrs, W. H. Fel
ton, in the auditorium of Brenau Col-
lege. Col. H. W- J. Ham introduced
Mrs. Felton to the audience;. This wo
man‘is known wherever the leading
papers of the state are read, her pen
having furnished articles on all the
important questions of the day; but
the occasion of her lecture on Thurs
day evening was the first opportunity
many of her admirers here had had of
meeting and knowing this brilliant
woman. AIL were Dleased with her
quiet dignity and refined personality.
The first lecture,“The Worneh of
he South during the Civil War,” was
largely reminiscent, the experiences of
Mrs. Felton being those of every cul
tivated womafc who owned ond inherit
ed slaves. She paid a glowing tribute
to the industrious, ihtelligent mistress,
and to the loyal, faithful black woman,
who was her assistant in the care of
the ante-bellum home
The lecture Friday morning was a
noble appeal to the mothers in behalf
of their children, 4 -Motherhood and
Heredity,” being the theme. Lt is to
be regretted that every* mother in
Gainesville did not hear Mrs. Felton
upon this subject.
