THE / GAINESVILLE NEWS, WEDNESDAY AUGUST 20, 1902 DELAP EKRIE&E-C AMP Announcement is .made of the engagement of Miss Ruby Camp of Atlanta, and Dr. W. P DeLa- perriere of Hoschton, the marriage to occur in early fall at the home of Mrs. Ella Camp on Ivy street. This announcement is an inter ior both the contract- At a regular meeting of the city council last Thursday night Mr. George Lathem was elected city clerk to succeed Mr. Joe Blalock, who has held that position for the last year-and-a-half. This action cf council came in the nature of a surprise, as nobody anticipated a change in the clerk’s office at this time of the year. It will be remembered that at the annual electibn of officers m January, Messrs Blalock and Lathem were both candidates for the position, but after balloting torty-seven times no election resulted, and un der the advise of the mayor Mr. Blalock held on until his succes sor was elected and qualified. It was generally thought that he would be allowed to serve out the remainder of the term. Friday morning, Mr.‘ Lathem made bond and at once took charge of the office. He is getting esting one ing parties have numerous friends here. Miss Camp is a great favor ite in Atlanta, and is a young wo man of uuusual beauty. Dr. De- Laperriere is one of Northeast Georgia’s wealthiest aud most prominent citizens* He has var ied interests at Hoschton 'and is a business man and citizen who is admired and respected generally. Miss Sadie Hunt of Columbus and Mrs. Mercer Fain of Atlanta were the winners of the two prizes, a Gibson picture and a “Fencing Girl.” JUEY EE VISION. who com- The jury commissioners adjourned last week before pleting their work of revising the jury list, metagain this morn ing and as we go to press their work is about finished. This 're vision is made every two years and the work has been thoroughly done by the present commissioners. IN HONOR OF MISS LEWIS. Avery delightful reception of last week was the one given on Friday evening by Mrs. W. L. Fierce complimentary to ber guest, Miss Mary P. Lewis of Valdosta. Mrs. Pierce’s home on Academy St. was tastefully decorated and “Shadow Pictures” was the amuse mentofthe evening. Refreshments were served, and the guests depar ted after having spent a most pleasant evening. Had Gainesville Relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. J. Allen, two pro minent and respected people of Tam pa, Fla., who were shot by Manue Chavez, the-former dying and the lat ter being fatally wounded, are related to Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Minor Lathem and Mrs. Ed Merck of Gainesvile, Mrs. Allen being a sis ter of the above ladies.. The tragic af fair has thrown a cloud of deep sorrow their Mr. Bell Is Thankful. To the Voters of Hall County: I take this method of thanking you in dividually land collectively for the the overwhelming majority given me in the primary election on August 7tb. mst. I must, of necessity, rest three or four weeks, after which I shall resume the duties of the office; and every obligation binding upon me, must and will be complied with so far as m me lies. Mrs. Davis went to Tampa immediately after the tragedy to be with her sister. W. T. Sell after an illness of two years duration. The cause of her death was a complication of diseases, hear trouble, dropsy etc. Mrs. Finger was a conscientious Christian woman, be ing a devout member of the Methodist church, to which she had belonged since early childhood. Mrs. Finger is survived by five chil dren, viz. L. F, Finger, Mrs. Mary A. Kenimer, of Texas, J. P. Finger, of California, C. J. Finger and Mrs. S. A. Sell. The funeral services will be held at the first Methodist church to morrow morning at 10 o'clock, con ducted by Rev. F. Quillian. The interment will be at Alta Vistg. cemet ery. Atlanta, Aug 18.—Col William Ar nold Hemphill, founder and for many years busines manager of the Atlanta Constitttion, died last night at his resi dence on Peachtree street. Col. Hemp hill has been in somewhat feeble health for a number of months, but his condi tion was not regarded as serious, and his death was a great shoek to. the en tire city. City .Court in Session. Hall City court convened here Mon day morning with Judge G. H. Pror on the bench. A number of cases have • - been disposed of. and many more are on the docket for this term, but all are of minor importance. Death of Infant. The one year old son of Mr. ,J. O. Smith died at the - Gainesville. Cotton Mills Sunday morning. Remains were taken-to Forsyth county, where they were interred Monday.
