William Young* blood, Auditor of the Interior, writes from Washington, D. The specific tax ordinance for year 1903 was read first time, and taken up by sections for adoption. The following ordinance was read first time and on motion the rules w T ere suspended aud on second reading passed: An Ordinance to fix the Annual and Specific Taxes of the city of Gaines ville, on business occupations for the year 1903 and to provide for the col lection of the same, licensing said occupations and professions. Section i. lie it ordained by the Mayor and Council of the citv of Gaines ville and it is hereby ordained by the authority of the same, That upon every person, persons or corporation exercising within said city during the year 1903. per annum,either of the following occupations or pro fessions, the following specific tax shall he levied and collected: said tax to be due and paid upon the commencement of each quarter, unless otherwise pro vided for in this ordinance. 1. ACCTIONEEKS,regularly engaged in such business, per annum — No auctioneer shall be permit ted to sell any article upon the streets without permission of the mayor. 2. Auctioneer, Every Itinerant Merchant offering stocas of goods for sale at auction, per diem 3. Agents, Attorneys, or other persons negotiating loans on real estate. 4. Bakery, with privilege of con fectioneries Banker, or Broker or Firm of persons engaged in buying or selling exchange, or discount ing notes or lending money.... Be it ordained that when good and sufficient reasons it may seen proper to tax any person or per sons following any business occupatioc or profession, whether residents oi non residents, and not specially men' tionea in this ordinance, the~ mayoi may in his discretion require such taa as he may deem just and equitable. Sec. 3. Be it further ordained that nc person shall exercise either of the oc cupations or professions in said eitj without procuring a license therefor, All persons who shall fail or refuse tc procure such license promptly after the beginning of the quarter shall on con' vietion, he punished according to Sec tion 68 of the code of the city of Gaines ville. Sec. 4. Be it ordained by the author ity aforesaid that no license shall b€ issued for any time less than provided for in this ordinance, and no reduction shall be made on account of the time that may have elapsed before the li cense is issued. Sec. 5. Be it ordained that all ordi nances and parts of ordinances in con flict wfith these ordinances are hereby repealed. Recording fee for each license, 5C cents. Col. S. C. Dunlap, Sr., was elected a member of the Board of Education tc till unexpired term of Col. Howard Thompson, resigned. A motion prevailed to reconsider the letting of the city printing, and $40 was appropriated for the printing of the council proceedings in both city papers being $2o for each paper. The print ing of office supplies was turned ovei to the clerk and chief to make such contracts as will be best for the city. No further business, on motion coun* cil adjourned. P. N.JPabker, George Lathem, Mayor, Clerk. 89. Council Chamber, Jan. 8th, 1803. Council called to order in regular ses sion by Mayor Parker. All members of the hoard of aldermen present. The minutes of the preceding meetings held Jan. 1st, 2nd and 5 th, read, corrected, and on motion adopted. The rules were suspended and after the second reading the annual specific tax ordi nance was amended as follows: Be it ordained by the Mayor and Council of the City of Gainesville, Geor gia, that Section 1, of the annual spe cific tax ordinance for the year 1903, be and is hereby amended, so as to include therein an annual license tax on bicy cle dealers, selling, renting and repair ing, and Surety companies, as follows; 88. Bicycle Dealers, renting or repairing bicycles, alone or in connection with any other bus iness §15 Surety Companies, writing surety bonds, employees liabil ity bonds,boiler and plate glass insui ance, one or all .$10 A motion prevailed for the council to appoint a man, whose duty shall be to supervise the work of the present street improvement, and any other public work of the city that may re quire a supervisor, under direction of the various standing committees. Said man to work for the present, under the direction o£ the street committee ' On motion Mr. T. V. Eberhart was ap pointed supervisor, as afore stated and to recive a salary of $40 per month with the understanding that his ser* vices can be dispensed with at any time the council may see fit to discontinue the employment of a supervisor. Stvanton of Buford, made a trip to Gainesville laBt Friday. Mrs. John R. Brown of Char Baton, N. C., is on a visit to her mother, Mrs. S, A. Langston, and is considering returning to Gaines ville to reside permanently!
