David B. Hill s Quaint Humor.
An incident illustrating ex-Sen-
ator David B. Hill's quaint humor
used to be told by the late Gen.
Ferdinand P. Earle, says the New
York Times. The general and his
family, a few years ago, when Mr.
Hill was in the Senate, were guests
at his spacious home in Washing
ton, D. C. One night at dinner
there was a pitcher of cream of a
yich brown tint on the table.
Young Earle, always of an inquir
ing mind, noticed the unusual
color.
“Senator," he aaid at length,
when he could no longer curb his
curiosity, “I wish you would tell
me what makes this cream so fun
ny looking—it’s sort of red, isn’t
it?”
Mr, Hill’s curious face broke
into a smile. “Well, I’ll tell
you,’’he replied, his eyes twink
ling merrily; “that is, if you’ll
not tell a soul what I tell you,”
‘•“Oh, I won’t,” answered the
lad t
The senator lowered his voice to
a whisper, and the youngster bent
forward to catch his words:
“We keep a red cow,” he said.

Stories of poverty and distress
are coming from both England
and Sweden. In London the
number of unemployed is said to
be larger than for many years,
while the winter is exceptionally
severe. In consequence the death
rate among the poor is high and
the suffering is intense. Among
the London sufferers are many
soldiers who law service in South
Africa and were mustered out at
the close of- that conflict. In
Northern Sweden it is stated there
are 70,000 persons who are starv
ing, because of the failure of the
crops last season. Heretofore the
Swedes have fallen back on fish in
times of crop failures, but this
year there is also a scarcity of fish.
