QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.
[The News takes pleasure in an
swering the following queries.]
How do coal and oak wood com
pare in heat giving power? W.H.
Each vanes much in caloric
power, but the average proportion
for evual weights is about 28 for
oak to 75 for coal.
Who buys old coins? 2. Is a
quarter of 1858 salable for more
than a quarter? E. L.
Dealers in, and collectors of,
coins, will buy rare sorts, and the
latter at times will pay a little/ 1
more than face value for old coins
that they lack when they are not
especially rare. 2. There is* a
very rare quarter of this date for
which coin dealers will pay from
$1.50 to $8 50, according to the
coin’s condition. It is without
arrowheads at the date. But moBt
quarters of 1853 were minted with
arrowheads, and these are not
wanted by dealers.
What expense of the wedding
should fall on the groom? W.
The clergyman’s fee and the car
riage that takes the couple away.
I am successful with plants
within doors, except as to ferns,
with which I fail utterly. How
can I treat them so they will
thrive? Mrs. T.
Ferns of delicate sorts are diffi
cult, but try next, instead of pots,
a box with gl&38 sides and top.
With this, the air about the ferns
will be kept charged with moist
ure, a highly favorable condition.
Why do i’s and j’s have dots
over them? J. M.
So that they may be more
easily recognizable. The dot ap
peared in the eleventh century,
but was not employed generally.
In the increasing demand for writ
ten works, which necessitated
economy of materials, a smaller
hand and a larger number of con
tractions, the dot spread. In the
fourteenth century it became fash
ionable, and for a time was placed
over “y.”
What is the effect of cold rolling
on steel? McV.
To compress it only very slight
ly, even when the pressure is enor
mous, but to increase its strength
appreciably aDd its elasticity very
much.
What do painters use to make
gold leaf stick? H. W.
Gold-Size, a priming containing
glue; or, mostly for outdoor work,
oil-size, which is a varnish made
of linseed oil and ochre.
What does “high noon” mean
in connection with th© hour set
fora function? E. M. S,
Noon precisely.
How is the speed of a rifle ball
measured? Harry.
By ascertaining the time in
which it passes over a short meas
ured space. Near the gun is put a
screen, and a known distance off
is another screen. The two are
connected electrically with appa
ratus that records, to a very min
ute fraction of a second the mo
ment when electric connection is
severed. As the bail cuts both
connections, the time it takes in
traversing the distance is shown.
Usually the time measurement is
taken by noting how far a weight,
released by the cutting of the first
screen, drops before the secoj d
screen is struck.

Persons who are thin and

“ Chronic cases ” that’s
what the doctors call them,
which in common English
means—long sickness.
To stop the continued
loss of flesh they need
Scott’s Emulsion. For the
feeling of weakness they

It makes new flesh and
gives new life to the weak

Scott’s Emulsion gets
thin and weak persons out

Scott’s Emulsion can be
taken as long as sickness
lasts and do good-all the
time.
There’s new strength

Why Fanny Wept.
A young Texas lady of a vio
lent temper, just about to be mar
ried was found weeping by a
friend “Why do you weep, Fan-
□ V? Your future husband is one
of the most kind-hearted men in
the world,” said the friend. ‘T
know it; but I can’t help feeling
sorry for the poor devil. I have
such a tender heart that it makes
me cry to think how I’ll boss him

idea what be is going to suffer at
my bands!” And once more the
kind hearted woman’s eyes were
filled with brine.
Most? editors will endorse the
following from the Vienna News :
“A mean skunk who will take a
paper from the postcffice and read
it, and then when caiied on to pay
for it, put it back in the office
marked ‘refused,’ is too infernally
mean to breathe the same air as
honest people. If we could make
the laws for just one day, we would
fix this sort of fellow to the
queen’s taste.”
