THE GAINESVILLE' NEWfc, WEDNESDAY, MARCH, 4, 1908.
Washington, Feb. 27.—Senator
■Borrows, chairman of the senate
(committee on privileges and elec

Thirteen Daughters of the Rev

House the other day muse have
enjoyed the pungent wit of the
President The ladies, delegates to
the convention of their order,
gsociation of Sait Lake, against! wished to pay their respects to the

Btitement, which is sworn to, de
clares that Smoot is a ploygamist
and now has a plural wife.

head of the nation and Represen
tative Alexander of Buffalo volun
teered to act their escort and in
troduce them to the President. As
Mr. Alexander and—the thirteen
Daughters entered the august
presence they were thus saluted:
“Why, hello. Senator Smoot; I
am delighted to see you. You have
come to present your family,
haven’t you?” The correspondent
of an administration paper pub
lished in Philadelphia assures us
that the ladies of the party “en
joyed the joke immensely, while
Mr. Alexander blushingly intro
duced them to the President.”
The itinerary includes visits to
the battlefields around San Juan
and Santiago, and to the ruins of
St. Pierre, Martinique. It is, of
course, necessary for the naval
and poscoffice services that these
scenes should be “inspected” by
the Secretary of the Navy and the
Postmaster General, and that
they should be conveyed thither
on a 500-ton war vesaol for a two
months’ cruise. Verily, Uncle Sam
is good to those of his servants
who are good to themselves.

A recent statement of Superin

send his produce to market in any

could over the old dirt roads, and
there are so few breakdowns that
the cost of repairs has been grea

these roads has largely increased

At the sale of the effects of Mrs.

sold was a pair of spoon moulds,
which is something only a few
people of the present generation
have ever seen. These moulds

to see a pair of monkey wrench

are 75 or 100 years old.

When mothers are worried
because the children do not
gain strength and flesh we
say give them Scott’s Emul

It is like the penny in the
milk because it works and
because there is something
astonishing about it.
Scott’s Emulsion is simply
a mrHc of pure cod liver oil
with some hypophosphites
especially prepared for delicate
stomachs.
Children take to it naturally
because they like the taste
and the remedy takes just as

The new issue of two-cent postage
stamps is to be retired at one. A storm
of well-based ridicule have proved too
much for the postal authorities. Some
sarcastic observer declared that, after
most careful, microscopic examination,,
he was prepared to assert and maintain
that the portrait on the stamp was
really that of Mr. Dooly and not that
of Washington. The newspaper para-
graphers quickly caught up the sug
gestion and the issue has been design
ated as 'the “Dooley stamp,” name by
which it will probably be known
henceforth. Retiring the issue will
make a good market lor stamp dealers,
who will shortly be advertising
“Dooley stamps” at a premium.
If Grover Cleveland was possessed
of the tact of helping out tne banks of
the country, same as the present Nat
ional administration is doing, the hard
times of 1890-95 might have been aver
ted, and the Democratic party be in
greater favor at the present time.
A Chicago dispatch says that Miss
Martha Wilson, a rich, cultured and
charming young woman of that city,
grown tired of the frivolities of society
has suddenly cast aside society life and
gone to work in the city’s bureau of
charities. She told her father that she
wanted to “do” something and not frit
ter away her life, and he permitted her
to have her way.
